"The work is a way of activating democracy."

- Sheryl Oring, artist

[Gallery]  Ringling College Braces for Second ArtWalk of the Season
Philip Lederer, Phil.Lederer@srqme.com

The Ringling College of Art and Design campus overflows this Friday, October 12, with an ArtWalk from 4pm to 7pm featuring the opening of seven new exhibitions. From faculty art to student creations, featured photographers, college-wide collaborations and even a former New York Times journalist looking to activate local democracy through art, folks may just have to run if they’re going to see it all.

Technically, the day begins at 11am, when journalist-turned-artist-for-democracy Sheryl Oring will be on campus with her “I Wish to Say” performance, seeing the artist adopt the role of a secretary out of the 1960s, armed with a typewriter so students and other passersby can dictate their own postcard to the president. It’s something she’s done since 2004, hoping to activate democratic impulses in her audiences, especially students. “That’s been important to me because young people sometimes feel like they’re not listened to,” says Oring. “Maybe they’ll actually write a letter to one of their elected officials or take action in some small way in their community.”

In the Basch Visual Arts Center, audiences will see selections from Oring’s past projects, as well as a new series incorporating statements ripped from news articles about the #MeToo movement and another new series exhibiting past postcards sent to President Trump through Oring in 2017.

Photography enthusiasts want to head for the Cooley Photography Center, where Meaning/Material explores these themes through the work of 11 photographers who search for meaning in a materialistic world. And be sure to swing by the Richard and Barbara Basch Gallery to see Kindred: Recent Photographs by Noelle McCleaf, highlighting two of the artist’s four-year projects through large-scale photographs made from film negatives.

Recent student work can be viewed at the 8th annual juried show in the Madeby Gallery, as well as in the Brizdle-Schoenburg Special Collections Center in the Goldstein Library, where an ongoing exhibition of photographs and wearable animal heads showcases the work of students learning costume design. For those curious about the other side of the equation, an exhibition in the William G. and Marie Selby Foundations Gallery shines a spotlight on work from all of the new additions to the college’s illustration department.

And to see what faculty and students can accomplish together, along with faculty and students from Saint Lucas College of Art and Design, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and other European universities dedicated to design, the Willis Smith Gallery presents A Tale of Two Cities, Mapping a Site. A six-year international collaborative project involving an ever-changing cast of contributing artists, the result is a multi-media sprawling artistic expression of the two cities, Sarasota and Antwerp.

For a taste of the Halloween spirit, swoop into the Crossley Gallery, where gallery directors Savannah Bonnette and Meagan Hindel indulge their dark sides with Macabre, a show full of “the gruesome, the grotesque, the grim.”

The Ringling College ArtWalk begins at 4pm on October 12 and runs through 7pm.

Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium is thrilled to announce its second year in a row jumping in the deep end with Community Foundation of Sarasota County, with a recent partnership grant for $55,000 for the upcoming season. The support comes from two funds at Community Foundation, the Martha Leither and Nancy Streeman Fund III and the Walter Haskins Fund in memory of Stacey K. Haskins. This year’s grant will provide support for several Mote programs such as the Strategic Partnerships Program for underserved and underrepresented youth, children and special-needs adults. Representative partners for this community-based marine science education program include AMI Kids, Booker High School, The Boys & Girls Club, Children First, Easter Seals, Girls Inc., Oak Park School, R.L. Taylor Community Center and others.

“The Community Foundation is once again proud to support a local leader in marine research and education,” says Roxie Jerde, the Community Foundation’s President & CEO. “Their commitment to providing access to marine science education and experiences to all, including underserved youth and young women, is unparalleled, and with this partnership grant, we look forward to another year of being a part of the positive impact Mote has on our community.”

The generous grant will also help a bright young woman dive into her dreams of following in the footsteps of Eugenie Clark. Community Foundation’s support will benefit Mote Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) student intern Maria Shehata, the recipient of Mote’s Eugenie Clark Marine Research Fellowship. This fellowship provides Shehata the support to continue her opportunity to advance her research skills and experience through the four-year internship at Mote. “Mote Marine Laboratory deeply values the support of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County,” says Erin Kabinoff, Mote’s Director of Development. “The Community Foundation’s commitment to Mote’s mission ensures we are able to provide opportunities for the next generation of women interested in science and increase access to marine science programming for children and youth in our community.”

Lastly, the grant allows for sponsorship support of Mote’s keystone events throughout the year, including Tea for the Sea, World Oceans Day, Teach-A-Kid Fishing & Ecology Clinic and the closest one to date, Oceanic Evening, taking place on October 27.

The Community Foundation of Sarasota County is proud to partner with SRQ Media Group to highlight stories about community impact powered by philanthropy in our region, thanks to the support of donors and our local nonprofit partners. The Community Foundation is a public charity founded in 1979 by the Southwest Florida Estate Planning Council as a resource for caring individuals and the causes they support, enabling them to make a charitable impact on the community.

[The Crow's Nest Restaurant & Marina]  Puttin' on the Ritz in Venice
Cori Spruiell

Although the name Rockefeller may conjure images of towering skyscrapers and crowded New York City plazas, the origin of oysters Rockefeller is decidedly southern. Born in the New Orleans kitchen of Jules Alciatore, the name came from the gloriously rich and elegant nature of the dish; but the recipe itself remains a mystery. Alciatore refused to divulge the exact ingredients, and ultimately took the original, definitive recipe to his grave; it remains a closely guarded family secret to this day.

The intrigue surrounding oysters Rockefeller is a blessing in disguise, as it allows chefs the opportunity to test the limits what could potentially be a restricting guideline. The Crow’s Nest Restaurant & Marina’s Chef Jon DeRue is one such opportunist, putting a brunch-time twist on the classic dish. Fresh oysters on the half-shell are topped with bacon and spinach, as well as Anisette, a liqueur with a slight licorice flavor. Smothered in a rich hollandaise sauce, Chef DeRue’s oysters Rockefeller is modern and exciting, while still maintaining the decadent luxury of the New Orleans original.
