[Where The Votes Are]  Younger Voters Underwhelm in Sarasota-Manatee
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

Generation Z voters in Sarasota and Manatee counties turned out to vote at higher rates than Millennials, but older voters still control the ballot box here. SRQ’s newest Where The Votes Are analysis of election trends finds, even with a major Senate and gubernatorial race at stake, less than half of voters under age 40 cast ballots in this year’s midterm.

It’s a dynamic that weights the influence of the region’s oldest and most politically active residents. While voters age 60 and over represent a little less than half of all registered voters in the voters eligible to vote in this year’s general election, they made up more than 58 percent of all voters who participated.

Voters in their 20s demonstrated the weakest voter turnout; just over 37 percent of registered voters came out in that age group. Meanwhile, more than 80 percent of voters in their 60s and 70s voted in the November 6 election. In fact, voters in their 90s boasted a better turnout rate than voters in the 30s, 20s or teens.

If there’s hope for youth turnout in the numbers, it’s that those newly registered voters under the age of 20 came out at a significantly higher rate than voters in their 20s.

But Sarasota remains a region already dominated by seniors, just in the make-up of the electorate. Nearly 277,000 of the region’s nearly 561,000 registered voters were older than 60 at the time of the election.

The numbers will be further discussed at an upcoming Where The Votes Are workshop on Tuesday, December 4. The event will be held at SRQ’s Downtown Sarasota headquarters, with doors opening at 7:30am, and a presentation at 8am. A $5 cover includes coffee, donuts and a precinct-by-precinct analysis of the November 6 election results from the Senate and Gubernatorial recounts to city and county referenda results.

[Finance]  Guido Helps Clients Throw Off Corporate Shackles
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

Striking out on your own can be terrifying, but financial advisor Evan Guido did just that when he opened a new firm in Lakewood Ranch. Aksala Wealth Advisors now operates to serve the “millionaire next door.”

Guido wants to serve the successful people looking toward a comfortable but prudent retirement. “We do well with the regular millionaire,” he says, namely the person who made a fortune, but not one so big that it couldn’t all evaporate if mismanaged.

A staple of Downtown Sarasota for years, he dealt with many who enjoyed a high level of service but did not need the billionaire’s treatment. When he decided to open his own firm, he bought a business condo in San Marco Plaza in a booming part of the Gulf Coast accessible to those still growing their wealth.

With a name that Guido came up with by spelling Alaska backwards, Aksala’s website explains the company’s core strategy “centers around rising dividend portfolios, providing our clients a current income stream that can increase over time.”

“Our portfolios also offer you a prudent way to participate in the wealth-building process over the long term—so you can retire with confidence,” the site continues.

The company combines wealth management and retirement income planning. Clients will learn about tax- and cost-efficient financial planning principles, and about how to discern investment fads from responsible practices.

The goal at Aksala will be helping clients throw off the shackles of proprietary products and corporate politics.

“It’s just focusing on solutions,” Guido says. “That’s at the heart of it.”

He believes there’s still a strong interest in personalized services, despite a very real “Amazon-ification” of the asset management game.

The good thing about technology, Guido says, is that he can work with independent developers capable of creating the best trading tools from a garage. He wants to employ the modern resources available in the field. “You can deposit checks with pictures now,” he says.

For the moment, Guido boasts a staff of four and seeks to grow a client list to about 100 families. “I want to leave a legacy here,” Guido says.

[Imbibe]  Chilled Huladaze
Britt Mattie

Whichever holiday you and your squad celebrate this festive time of year, drink it down with the newly-released Tommy Bahama original “Happy Huladays,” as a special craft cocktail for the season. A drink of this light and wholesome nature is a refreshing alternative from a thicker eggnog, hot cocoa or other traditional wintertide drinks. With a combination of Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum, cranberry ginger syrup and freshly squeezed lemon juice, TB’s recipe says to top it off in a chilled martini glass with some Prosecco for a sparkling touch that’ll tingle your taste buds and have you feeling the holiday spirit in no time. The handcrafted “Happy Huladays” cocktail can be enjoyed now and into the new year at Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar. And if the feeling moves you, test out your own bartending skills at home using the recipe provided above. Cheers, SRQ imbibers!
