Friday Weekend Edition

"The human body can say anything and everything."

- Lynn Davison, artist

[Gallery]  Minding the Body with Lynn Davison
Philip Lederer, Phil.Lederer@srqme.com

Allyn Gallup Contemporary Art Gallery celebrates tonight’s First Friday with a mid-season surprise in New Work x 3, a group exhibition opening tonight and featuring new works from three local artists—Jean Blackburn, Susan Zukowsky and Lynn Davison. Blackburn, a painter and a naturalist, continues her series on the waters of Myakka, bucking chemical convention and bringing oil and its immiscible partner together to great success, while Zukowsky brings collage and mixed media to the walls, as well as a pair of small sculptures commenting on the Parkland and Pulse shootings. Davison brings a whole slew of large-scale oil paintings made in the last 18 months, and reminding audiences of her very particular set of skills.

Commanding near half the gallery, Davison’s work seems to imply a sum greater than its parts, like the unwritten mythology of a questionable pantheon and its dogged heroes— the heightened reality of a low world, populated by lost and titanic figures, vulnerable and naked, but unapologetic all the same. “There’s something almost biblical about it,” says Mark Ormond, who curated the exhibition. Moving close to the canvas, he points to the precision of the human form captured in the hands, the feet, the shins—the attention to detail and mastery of anatomy and flesh that makes him think of Michelangelo and The Last Judgment. “Her work is really an extension of the Baroque Period,” he says.

And that mastery comes from 35 years of practice, relentlessly pursuing the precision Ormond so admires. Indeed, for Davison, the human form holds all the mystery and draw she’ll ever need. “I’ve never been interested in anything else,” she admits. Eschewing still life and landscapes and the endless abyss of abstraction, Davison’s focus remains razor-sharp on that one thing which, when mastered, can say all things. “The human body can say anything and everything,” she says. “What else is there?” And so she conjures these scenes from her imagination, populating them with the lumpen and shock-haired creations whose every curve and gesture, brought to life under her skilled brush, can tell a story.

New Work x 3 opens tonight at Allyn Gallup Contemporary Art, with a reception with the artists at 5:30pm, and will be on display through March 31.

[GoodBite]  Israeli Food Truck Brings the Holy Land Gulf Side
Brittany Mattie, brittany.mattie@srqme.com

A new food truck is pulling in and taking up a parking space in the streets of Sarasota. And we’re not mad. Think high-end food—rich in quality as it is culture—but “without all the frills and refinements of fine dining”, says Carl Kolber, Co-owner and Sous Chef of Spice Boys. Partnered with Steven Schmitt, Head Chef, the two college friends aren’t afraid to display their quirky and fun personalities on their brightly colored mobile kitchen. The dynamic duo do note however, that it’s difficult to describe their cuisine in a sentence or two. “God knows we have tried," he says. "It just doesn’t fit into any one category.” So the Spice Boys ultimately came up with “Modern Israeli Cuisine,” with many of the dishes inspired by the likes of Chef Ottolenghi, restaurant Palomar in London, Chef Ori Menashe's Bavel in Los Angeles and more.

Considering the extreme intricacy and processes of many of Kolber and Schmitt’s dishes, the food truck will limit its menu to 3-6 elevated dishes any given day.

Expect off-the-cuff Israeli salvations such as 24-hour sous vide oxtail on flatbread (pictured above), 20-month aged Benontons ham with red eye mayo, housemade pickle and challah bread, eight-hour braised pulled lamb burger, Kofta kebab on pita and tuna tartare with sour cream, tostado and schug (Israeli salsa made with garlic, chili, cilantro and Middle Eastern spices). Vegetarians can look forward to cauliflower "steak" and corn on the cob with butter-mayo and aleppo pepper, while the Chongqing style chicken wings are served crispy and tossed in a secret numbing spice mix. And you didn’t think they forgot about Mediterranean’s favorite spread did you? Be sure to try the homemade hummus flavors—ranging from pepperoncini, spicy corn/tahini/amba (tangy mango pickle sauce) and avocado/peanut-harissa (red chili garlic paste). Wrap up your exotic feast with a corn cookie and a wholesome glass of milk.

Meet the Spice Boys at this weekend’s DUB FEST—JDub's Brewing Co. 5th Anniversary Music Festival—March 2-3.

[Theater]  FST Presents Spelman Award, Raises Funds for New Play Development

This week, artists and supporters of Florida Studio Theatre flocked to the theater for its annual fundraiser, the Denim & Diamonds Shindig, and presentation of the annual Grant Spelman Award. Named in honor of FST Founding Artistic Director John Spelman, the Spelman Award is presented to an individual or corporate sponsor who has demonstrated extraordinary leadership through philanthropic support, stewardship and service. This year’s award went to Wendy and Bob Grady for their unparalleled support of FST’s Winter Season programming and award-winning WRITE A PLAY program. Because of their generosity, FST has been able to expand its WRITE A PLAY program to Camden, New Jersey, one of the country’s most impoverished cities. Through this gift, three of FST’s top teaching artists held a week-long residency at Camden’s Holy Name School, where they taught students the fundamentals of playwriting and worked with them to craft their own plays.

And as New Play Development is the lifeblood of FST and a year-round activity, a paddle raise was also held to raise money for FST’s newest play initiative, The Playwrights Collective, in order to provide additional support to playwrights during the creative process. The money raised through this will provide actors, directors, artistic staff, and audiences with whatever they need during a play’s development process.
