"The city needs to stop playing games and start protecting Sarasota's historic neighborhoods."

- Janet Minker, Sarasota resident

[Government]  Are Historic Structures Safe in Burns Court?
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

With a classic Burns Square building all but demolished, historians want answers why the City of Sarasota did nothing to stop it.

Janet Minker, a Sarasota resident long-involved in preserving area architecture, was stunned to see a “renovation” of a structure on the 440 block of Burns Court look like a complete teardown. She posted a photo on Facebook in early March that quickly riled up architectural and historian voices in Sarasota. “Does this look like a renovation to you?” Minker wrote.

But city officials say while the Burns Court Historic District has a spot in the National Register of Historic Places, the property the home sits on is privately owned. Dr. Clifford Smith, Sarasota Historic Preservationist, said the building is a contributing structure in a national historic district.

“As such, the City has no review authority under the City’s current Zoning Code,” says city spokesman Jason Bartolone, “Further, federal guidelines state that a private owner has no obligation to restore or retain a building on the National Register, and they can do anything they wish to the structure as long as federal funds are not involved. “

Bartolone said the incident does show why the city’s Historic Preservation Board supports multiple zoning text amendments to strengthen protections of structures. One such amendment would impose administrative review on buildings like Burns Court houses.

“Such a change in the Zoning Code would allow City staff to review plans and determine whether those plans meet the standards for an historic building and suggest modifications so the historic nature is preserved,” he says. But such an amendment needs to go through the Development Review Committee, Historic Preservation Board, Planning Board and City Commission. Assuming the change wins approval each step of the way, the amendment would go into place in the fall.

Minker says she’s just frustrated the city didn’t work to stop this teardown.

“We can argue the technical points of permitting and codes all day,” she says, “but the city needs to stop playing games and start protecting Sarasota’s historic neighborhoods, Burns Court being the most important.”

[Education]  Sarasota County Schools, Sprint, GCCF Team to Expand Student Internet Access

Millions of high school-aged students across the country do not have access to reliable Internet at home, yet 70 percent of America’s teachers assign homework to be completed online, resulting in dramatically uneven outcomes among students. Sarasota County Schools, with the assistance of Sprint’s 1Million Project Foundation, aims to bridge that gap for nearly 1,000 students in Sarasota County.

The school district was recently selected by the 1Million Project to participate in its national initiative to help 1 million low-income high school students across the country by providing them with free high-speed Internet access at home. In the district’s first year of participation, Sprint will offer wireless hotspots to over 850 students identified by the district. In subsequent years, students in need might also receive free wireless devices through the program. The school district’s participation in the program grew from conversations between district administrators and Gulf Coast Community Foundation, which funded the grant-writing services to apply for the 1Million Project grant.

In May, Sarasota County Schools will begin the survey process to identify students who will be offered a free Wi-Fi hotspot through the grant. The district expects to distribute hotspots to students in August, prior to the start of the new school year. Sarasota County Schools intends to focus on rising eighth graders, as their hotspot will remain in their possession throughout high school and graduation.

[Correction and Clarification from the Editors]  SRQ Magazine, April 2019 "Modest Modern" Article

In the April 2019 issue of SRQ magazine, the article “Modest Modern” incorrectly spelled the name of Firmo Construction President Eric Collin. In the same article, the word “invest” was utilized in the subhead with the intended meaning of referring to an investment of time and energy. To clarify, Lunardi Architecture and Firmo Construction worked together as recurring collaborators and long-term partners in the project described.

[Clarification From the Editors]  SRQ Magazine: April 2019: Best of SRQ Local Best Private School

In the April 2019 issue of SRQ magazine, The Out-of-Door Academy was recognized by readers as the Platinum winner in the category of Best Private School and listed in the “Best of SRQ Local” feature. The fictitious school of West Beverly High from the '90s American teen drama television series “Beverly Hills 90210” was mentioned in the opening introduction. The meaning of the copy “At a campus cooler than West Beverly High—and a learning environment where students occasionally go to class . . .” was intended as a humorous reference to Beverly Hills 90210, and that unlike those kids, ODA kids do go to class.
