[House + Home]  New Smart Home Community Debuts With Net Zero Carbon Footprint
Brittany Mattie, brittany.mattie@srqme.com

Sarasota-based developer Pearl Homes recently unveiled Hunters Point Resort & Marina, the world’s first Zero-Energy community built for the masses. Designed with help from the Florida Solar Energy Center, the 86 private residences and 48 private boat slips are all LEED-certified and comprise a de facto power grid—providing a host of highly-progressive implications. Every Pearl Home within Hunters Point’s waterfront site, “generates more energy than it consumes,” says President and Founder Marshall Gobuty. “Our team went before the Manatee BOCC (Board of County Commissioners) and we were accepted 7-0, showing the importance and interest in these types of smart communities.”

He, along with former NBA player Dahntay Jones, now managing partner and vice president, envision Pearl Homes as a catalyst in creating a new norm in responsible, sustainable living on the Suncoast, and beyond. The energy-efficient and technology-advanced modern homes in Cortez, FL have gained national and global attention—with Gobuty and Jones now fielding interest from builders and potential partners across the U.S. and around the world. “Since both Manatee and Sarasota counties are leading the way in making home availability and affordability for working class homeowners, it's a natural transition for these counties to now take the lead in creating the first net zero plus community offered at a comparable price point to similar homes in the area,” says Gobuty. “Hunters Point stands as the driver of sustainable living, creating the first-ever community that will generate 90-95% of all its power from renewable resources.”

Producing more energy than necessary, Pearl Homes tapped right into Florida’s greatest natural resource, and Hunters Point eliminates its carbon footprint by running solely on solar power. But beyond the structures’ solar PV panels, the “game changer” deems to be the German-engineered SonnenBatterie® technology attached to each residence. The revolutionary solar battery system is the only one of its kind to take all the power from a house’s solar panels, store the excess for use at night and even share its energy with other Sonnen users—creating a whole community grid to operate as a “virtual power plant of clean energy”.

Each residence is constructed of a carbon fiber material, strong enough to withstand a category 5 storm. Every 600-square-foot house features ample exterior living space with wrap-around decks, a rooftop Skydeck, ENERGY STAR appliances, WaterSense fixtures and irrigation, and a two-car garage with electric vehicle charging ports. They’re also equipped fully with Google Home Automation systems Nest and Google Assistant. Google’s artificial intelligence eliminates any electric bill and also ensures the sonnenBatterie never reaches below four percent, by knowing the right times to source power and charge up the grid. Meanwhile, with direct access to the Gulf of Mexico, an alternative energy water taxi is available to take homeowners to AMI and out to neighboring beaches.

"21st-century developers bear an awesome resoonsibility, because buildings accounts for 39% of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States, more than any other sectory," says Gobuty. "That's why we believe it's imperative that we improve our world with the way we live and the way we iinteract with nature and our community."

[GoodBite]  If You Like Pina Smoothies
Brittany Mattie, brittany.mattie@srqme.com

Green Zebra Cafe, the airy cafe on St. Armand’s providing vegetarian and vegan-friendly options, along with all-day breakfast, fruit smoothies, wellness shots and fresh-pressed juices, will move into the former Mozaic restaurant downtown. The soon-to-expand move to Main Street is receiving a highly-anticipated welcoming by clean-eating Sarasotans. Green Zebra’s second location will feature a larger kitchen and more seating, while keeping its mostly raw menu of omelets, avocado toast, wraps/sandwiches, hearty salads, acai bowls and gluten-free chia puddings. However, rumors abound that they are also looking to expand the downtown menu with additional breakfast items, as well as more vegan and keto options. Green Zebra’s new 1377 Main St. location is slated to open this summer, just in time for thirst-quenching smoothie jaunts and getting caught in the rain.

[Government]  Manatee County Re-Opening New and Improved Skateparks

Later this month Manatee County will officially re-open two new and improved skateparks at G.T. Bray Park and Blackstone Park. Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources will host a grand opening of G.T Bray Skatepark at 6pm on May 22 and Blackstone Skatepark at 6pm on May 23. Free helmet fittings for all ages will also be available first-come first-serve at both grand openings.
The new skatepark improvements include permanent “skate-able” landscapes that will be fun for every skateboarder—no matter their age, style or experience. Each skatepark has different layouts and transitions, plus a skateboard repair station equipped with tools. The G.T. Bray Skatepark includes bleachers and shade. Future funding will provide for bleachers and shade at the Blackstone Skatepark as well.
The skatepark replacements are a major project funded by the half-cent infrastructure sales tax, approved by Manatee County voters in the fall of 2016. Both skateparks were designed and constructed by Jason Baldessari with Spohn Ranch Skatepark and constructed by Rampage, LLC.
