Pedestrians and drivers alike couldn’t help but notice that the Main Street and Lemon Avenue intersection implemented designated roadblocks and downtown detours on Tuesday, May 28. Construction swifty took place that morning and is set to last a total of five weeks on a $3-million streetscaping project voted by City Commissioners—adding in new, red bricks onto the sidewalks, and removing the curbs to be at street level.
While the cosmetic rework will look and feel more pedestrian-friendly, the construction closures to the highly-trafficked intersection has affected area merchants for business—taking away a number of Main Street parking spots and blocking storefront walkways. Despite the divergent perspectives between taxpayers and City Commissioners of whether the streetscape uplift was truly necessary or not, Sarasota Farmers Market Executive Director Phil Pagano believes it will ultimately “enhance the market in many ways, including the redesign of Paul Thorpe Park.”
Earlier this year, the vendors relocated to avoid construction—shifting from State Street and South Lemon Avenue to the North side of Lemon and trickling down 1st Street. This move did not affect the size or scope of the market and Pagano hopes it does not affect the weekend attendees now either. He urges locals to continue coming out to Saturday’s farmers market during the continued construction process. “The vendors could really use the community’s help by attending as much as possible,” he says for those hesitant to head to the area for the coming weeks.
The intersection concept plan is said to be completed by July 4th weekend. And a reminder, the Sarasota Farmers Market is open year-round, 7am-1pm every Saturday, rain or shine.

Craig Smith has been promoted to partner and vice president of customer relationships for Pinnacle Community Association Management, the Sarasota-based company, which provides comprehensive management services for small to medium-sized homeowners and condominium associations throughout Southwest Florida. A Licensed Community Association Manager (LCAM) with more than 18 years’ experience in community service contracting, delivery and management, Smith will spearhead Pinnacle’s client-building, marketing and community outreach efforts, while also managing a portfolio of existing clients for the company.
Before joining Pinnacle in October 2018, Smith was an executive manager with Allied Universal and former equity partner with ALERT Protective Services. He also served for nine years as a regional president for Securitas Security Services USA, where he managed a $250 million region that included over 7,500 employees. Prior to that, he held the position of director of solutions development for G4S, a global security solutions firm.
The Sarasota Yacht Club recently completed renovations of its new $1.2 million Spinnaker pool bar and outdoor kitchen. SYC member and architect Mark Sultana designed the addition, continuing the usage of his hallmark Coastal Contemporary design used on the creation of the main clubhouse. Sultana is the principal architect for DSDG where his work is defined by clean lines and natural materials and textures. Michael Dooley of MM Dooley Group, Inc. served as the lead contractor for the six month project which also included new pavers and pool-side furniture from Outdoor by Design. The bar features seating for 20, four large screen televisions, a full-service bar and a free-standing kitchen. Roll down shades were added that allow members to enjoy the pool bar and view, regardless of the weather.

Just as Paul Gauguin left an indelible mark on the post-Impressionist art world, the deep impact of botanical imagery on his work cannot be denied. This exhibition will highlight the essential role of botanicals in achieving the artist’s vision of the savage, primitive and exotic. Together with lush displays of tropical plants in the conservatory and gardens, the show will feature dramatic woodcuts and rarely seen works in other mediums by the artist.

This exhibition features new work by acclaimed photojournalist David Burnett, commissioned by his 2017 Greenfield Prize at the Hermitage Artist Retreat. In this engaging series, he treats his subjects with reverence as he celebrates their tenacity and challenges notions of aging in the 21st century.

Frank Bibbins has used infrared and low color imagery to capture the evolving landscape of the Myakka River and State Park over the past decade.
