Tony Stopperan knows the limits of operating in Sarasota compared to Los Angeles. The film producer can’t set a meeting and just across town with a major studio in an hour. It takes time to make a project happen.
But with the Skyway Film Institute, an film finance and production company which leverages private equity investment into film projects for regional benefit, that Stopperan founded this year, he hopes to improve the ability for local professionals to bring their visions to the screen.
“As a regional, off-market producer, it takes a time commitment to develop a project,” he says. “But I have an affinity for this area for the quality of life, the same reason people move to Sarasota from all other industries.”
The Institute was born indirectly from Skyway Film Festival that took place in Manatee a few years ago. The company consults with film projects in a four-county region—Sarasota, Manatee, Pinellas and Hillsborough.
The first major project connected to the Institute, I Saw a Man With Yellow Eyes starring Katherine Heigl and Harry Connick, Jr., ended up shooting in all four of those counties. The film was written and directed by Castille Landon, a recognizable actress with regional ties, and was shot over 21 days, with 100 percent of investment taking place here, including $82,000 in Sarasota County alone
Not every Institute-connected film will shoot here; Stopperan says two pending projects were conceived here but for creative or financial reasons will do much of their filming out of state. But the Skyway region will still serve as a sort of home base. As the area sees more soundstages and post-production facilities open, infrastructure long desired by film leaders in the area, there will be plenty of business opportunities even if the Florida terrain appears nowhere in a final movie cut.
And Stopperan at this point in his career can offer a fair amount of sage advice to filmmakers trying to make it.
His film resume boasts production credits for 10 finished or upcoming film and episodic projects, including executive producer lines of three shot in the area (The Lucky 6; Paradise, FL and I Saw a Man with Yellow Eyes). He also wrote and directed the film Draupadi Unleashed.
He boasts strong connections to such industry-critical institutions as Ringling College of Art and Design, where he worked at the time a film program launched there, and Film Florida, a state film commission where he served as vice chair for two years. 
Board-certified Family Practice Physician Anthony J. Spinella, MD, has joined Intercoastal Medical Group at its Palmer Ranch location. For 25 years, Spinella was a podiatrist with a practice in Venice. He then attended medical school, receiving his Doctor of Medicine degree from International University of the Health Sciences School of Medicine in Basseterre, St. Kitts. Spinella completed his residency at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria, Unity Point Health Methodist Hospital in Peoria. He is board-certified by the American Board of Family Practice. He is accepting new patients at Intercoastal Medical Group’s Palmer Ranch I location at 8592 Potter Park Drive, Sarasota.
Lakewood Ranch-based Halfacre Construction Company was recently awarded the project to replace and add an approximately 14,000-square-foot building at Englewood Elementary School in Englewood. The new structure is currently in the design phase by Fawley Bryant Architecture, with the project projected to break ground in spring 2020. The current building No. 6 will be demolished after the replacement is completed. The newest structure will house classrooms and other educational spaces for elementary children. The approximately $5.5 million project will be phased to accommodate an active campus. Located at 150 North McCall Road in Englewood, the current campus consists of 12 buildings and four portables.
Realtors Jennifer Adamovsky and Karin Dubbs have joined RE/MAX Alliance Group. Adamovsky has joined the Venice office as a member of Donna Palm & Associates, and Dubbs has joined the Englewood office.
A native of Venice and a 46-year resident of the area, Adamovsky brings a thorough knowledge of the market, deep community roots and a focus on customer service. She has a B.S. in Alternative Medicine from the Sarasota campus of Everglades University. A Graduate of the Realtor Institute (GRI), Dubbs specializes in assisting buyers and sellers in challenging circumstances, helping them reach their real estate goals. Prior to her real estate career, she worked in landscape design, and has a bachelor's degree in horticulture.
This new exhibition fuses artworks from The Ringling’s permanent collection of modern and contemporary art and selections from Keith D. and Linda L. Monda’s collection. As part of the four promised gifts from the Monda family, pieces by Beverly Pepper, Teo González, Yayoi Kusama and Richard Serra enable the Museum to present a broader and more complex history of late twentieth- and early 21st-century art. These new promised gifts will be featured along with other selections from Monda’s collection and key works from the Ringling’s own growing collection of modern and contemporary art.

Visit the showing of Kusana: Infinity as part of The Ringling and Monda Collections’ Summer Film Series. Ringling staff will introduce the film and lead a brief discussion about each of the three highlighted women artists of the series. On every third Monday of the month, Julie Cook Downing, President of Caregivers Comfort Creations, LLC, facilitates a Doctors Hospital Caregiver Support Group. This group focuses on the caregiver and offers a retreat from the never ending mental and physical responsibilities of caregiving. This free, open group provides compassionate support and an opportunity to explore new solutions together to caregiver challenges. The group meets in the classroom outside of the cafeteria.
