[Visual Arts]  Teak Treasures and Antique Artifacts at the Southern Atelier
Philip Lederer, Phil.Lederer@srqme.com

Antique aficionados and bargain hunters can rejoice this weekend, as the Southern Atelier art school hosts the first in a series of four Saturday sales this August, featuring a hand-picked collection of antique and hand-carved teak furniture from Indonesia. The Summer Estate Sale begins tomorrow at 9am at the Southern Atelier art school and runs until 1pm. A portion of proceeds will benefit the art school.

Hand-selected and purchased from village artisans and collectors in the islands of Indonesia, such as Java and Madura, the selection shows great variety in particular offerings, but all have been hand-carved and hand-crafted, often from reclaimed wood from teak boats or houses. In this way, elegant meets rustic, as intricate and delicate carvings and reliefs meet the weathered beauty of aged and painted teak. Find specially designed bar stools handmade by the boat-makers of Sulawesi, and perhaps pair it with a 10-drawer armoire of Javanese construction. See antique Madura windows, an antique gong adorned with carven serpents and even a rare, 110-year-old solid teakwood lasung, or rice mortar. Cabinets, tables, drawers, chests and more will all be on display—enough to nearly redecorate the entire house.

In total, the collection numbers in the high 70s, estimates Ethan Balno, the man who traveled the Indonesian isles and brought this teak treasure to Sarasota. Not all of it can fit in the Southern Atelier at one time, so the selection will change each Saturday, depending also on what sells. Some pieces, such as a grand set of carven doors, complete with a multi-colored frame, prove too large to transport, but Balno will be on hand throughout the sale with photos of the entire collection and a wealth of knowledge at his fingertips. “I know this stuff inside and out,” he says.

And best of all for bargain hunters, Balno says that all these treasures can be purchased for wholesale prices—or better. “So if something is $500,” he says, “it might be $1200 in the store.”

With the first sale tomorrow at 9am at the Southern Atelier, the rest will follow on the subsequent three Saturdays: August 17, 24 and 31. The Southern Atelier is located at 7226 21st St. E, Sarasota.

[GoodBite]  Gangster Pet-tential
Brittany Mattie, brittany.mattie@srqme.com

The concept of the campaign resembles that of missing persons on milk cartons, but much furrier and saucier. Brancato’s Brick Oven Pizza is the first pizzeria in Florida to put “Lost Dog” flyers on its boxes for takeout and delivery. So the next time you order the “Smokin’ Goodfella” pie, don’t worry about going home “to grab your shinebox,” just take your pizza box and go. But before breaking open the gangster contents in the cardboard—roasted red pepper cream sauce, melted smoked mozzarella, spicy Italian sausage, fresh garlic, red onion and basil, on a nod-worthy crust—take a mental note of the wet nose adhered to it and don’t you “Fuggedaboutit.” That puppy face has a famiglia who very much wants to be reunited. For family-owned Brancato’s, it was a no-brainer to partner with local nonprofit, Lost & Found Pets 941—understanding wholeheartedly how important family is. And “pets are family,” says Co-owner Alex Christianson, a dog owner himself. “Any part in reuniting them is fantastic for us, the owner and the pet.”

People can make their own flyers and bring them in, or Lost Pet Services will supply them, then update on whether the pets have been returned to owners. The photo of a handsome Maltese/Shih Tzu mix named Bob, comes plastered on the box—not to bum you out that he’s lost, but as a visual utensil to recognize his mug straying the streets. While you may very well be the reason a missing dog finds its way back to its loving home, a shamelessly satisfying bonus remains the “real deal” wood-fired New York-style pizza—coming straight outta Brooklyn and making a name for itself in Bradenton and beyond.

[Science and Nature]  Selby Gardens Announces 2019 Orchid Show 'Blossoms of Asia'

The 2019 iteration of the annual Orchid Show at Selby Gardens returns October 12 with The Orchid Show: Blossoms of Asia. The exhibition explores the variety and beauty of orchids found throughout Asia. From October 12 to December 1, Selby Gardens will highlight the orchids of Asia set within Asian-inspired landscape design. This will not only afford an opportunity to feature different orchid species, but also enable an examination of the cultural significance of orchids, as manifest in Asian art, philosophy and religion.

Blossoms of Asia will combine a display of living orchids in the Tropical Conservatory with an exhibition of orchid treasures from Selby’s bibliographic and preserved collections in the Museum of Botany and the Arts. The orchids in the Tropical Conservatory will include Asian specimens from Selby Gardens’ living plant collection. The display will reference traditional Japanese garden design and horticultural practices, including ikebana, the art of flower arranging; and bonsai, the creation of miniaturized trees.

Inside the Museum of Botany and the Arts, information on Selby’s Asian orchid collection, accompanied by a selection of Asian orchid spirit and herbarium specimens will be on display. The north gallery will feature rare botanical books and prints from the Selby Research Library, coupled with ink paintings and watercolors generously lent by the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach. Several exhibition themed events and programs will accompany the show, which runs through Thanksgiving weekend.

[Science and Nature]  Mote Marine Reports Record Sea Turtle Nesting

Sea turtle nesting season is not yet over, but Mote’s Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program (STCRP) has already recorded a 38-year-record number of nests in the Sarasota area. STCRP monitors sea turtle nesting on the 35-mile stretch of beaches from Longboat Key through Venice.

As of August 4, Mote’s STCRP has documented a total of 5,063 nests across all sea turtle species—4,888 loggerhead nests, 170 green turtle nests and five other nests. For the first time in the program’s history, there are at least two green sea turtle nests on every key/region in Mote’s area of monitoring.

In addition to record nesting numbers, STCRP has also been busy tagging a record number of nesting females. As of July 31, STCRP tagged 468 turtles, compared to 2016's record of 451 turtles tagged. The team also logged a record number of turtle encounters, 719.

Mote’s long-term tagging and nesting data are crucial for determining estimates and trends for sea turtle populations in the area, and can answer important questions such as how well local nesting females survive year to year, how often females return to a specific site, how far apart a female spreads her nests and how many turtles enter the nesting population each year.
