Pavement artists from around the world gathered at the Venice Airport Festival Fairgrounds this past November for the ninth annual Sarasota Chalk Festival. With more than 240 artists participating, including the inventor of 3D pavement art, Kurt Wenner, and fellow pavement art pioneer Julie Kirk-Purcell, who led the festival to a Guinness Book World Record in 2014, the theme of the year was Love and Peace. Founded by local artist Denise Kowal, the Sarasota Chalk Festival stands as annual tribute and testament to the beauty and possibility of ephemeral art as it transforms the world around it, and Kowal hints at big plans for next year’s 10th anniversary.
