Pine View parent and former teacher Pamela Gavette filed on Wednesday for Sarasota County School Board. She is challenging incumbent Jane Goodwin for the District 5 seat.

“I am running because I believe, as a product of Sarasota County schools and a parent of current students in the Sarasota County schools, plus a Florida-certified public school teacher substitute teaching in Sarasota county schools, I bring a unique perspective that will complement and enhance the Board," Gavette said in a candidate announcement.

Gavette has been a member of the Pine View School Pine View Association, a parent liaison, a homeroom parent and part of Pine View’s Shared Decision-Making Team. She has served on the Pine View School Advisory Council for 10 years. She previously taught fourth grade in Pasco County, where she earned the Sallie Mae Teacher of the Year award in 1992. She left the profession in 2002 to care for her children full-time but has continued to substitute teach and continue her own education, she says.

Gavette unrolled an 'SRQ Plan' for the schools, focused on 'Safety' for students and teachers, 'Restoring' local control for teachers and the community, and 'Quality' education for students and teachers.
