[Startups]  BuzzPrizeExpo Boosts Entrepreneurship

The spirit of entrepreneurship was celebrated at Ed Smith Stadium on Friday as the inaugural BuzzPrizeExpo launched. Now, organizer Suzette Jones hopes to start up conversation about providing better support to up-and-coming businesses. We proved that the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well on the Gulf Coast,” she said. “From the vendors to the six selected startups who pitched to private investors, we saw innovation and enthusiasm at all levels.”

Among the business minds celebrated at the event was Adnan Dedic, who along with business partner Samuel Runnacles won a Young Entrepreneur award. Dedic, who is working on the development of one app that blocks social media use while driving and another that allows users to share fitness and dieting progress on social media, said the event marked an important chance to pitch investors and network with marketing and other professionals. “This was just one more step up in terms of progress,” he said. “It was a good event, and it will definitely pick up and inspire other entrepreneurs to create and make a difference.”

Other awards honored all kinds of mentors and startups. Heather Holst-Knudson of KidBacker won a Woman Entrepreneur award and Chris Mitchell of Rimlox was honored as a Veteran Entrepreneur. Voalte President and CEO Trey Lauderdale was named Entrepreneur of the Year, while Biter Enterprises Founder and CEO Jesse Biter was named Connector of the Year and Ron Ciaravella of Dolphin Aviation was named Influencer of the Year. Meanwhile, former U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith was honored as Person of the Year.

Jones said the BuzzPrizeExpo also revealed some gaps in the region's business infrastructure, particularly when it comes to support for early-stage entrepreneurs. “If we want our innovators to stay in the region, we must give them our business at the very beginning. These hardworking startups need support from our public officials, organizations and clientele. It is the future economy of our region.”

[Tuesday Tech Talk]  E-blasting Toward the Holiday Season
Pedro Perez, pedro@nuevoadvertising.com
Now is the time to start working on holiday promotional campaigns and taking advantage of the power of of online resources—especially e-blast emails—to help spread the word. Whether you are a seasoned e-mail marketing pro or a novice, here are some tips you should keep in mind to increase the effectiveness of your campaign.

It’s important to have a clean and modern e-blast design, and even at our ad agency we sometimes find this challenging. During the Holiday season, time is especially short for your customers and potential customers and they will spend only about 4.8 seconds scanning your email before they decide to read further. Designing an elegant and simple e-blast that clearly states your key messages is essential in getting their attention – fast! Resist the temptation to cram tons of text in your promotions to ensure the message elicits action.

How do you decide what design will work for your business? At Nuevo, we’ve conducted countless focus groups to determine what is most appealing to consumers. We’ve found consumers are most interested in discounts, special sales and coupons this time of year. Sounds obvious, right? The “prime real estate” in your e-blasts is from the headline down to the first two or three inches of that email.

[Best of SRQ Local]  Sarasota Chalk Festival: Defending Champions

It might not be Thursday yet, but we're throwing back to the 2015 Best of SRQ Local Competition when Sarasota Chalk Festival took home the distinction for Best Festival. As the event is open now through November 16, we thought this was the best time to remind you to log on and vote for your favorite festival. Luckily for local residents, there's a host of them to choose from. If film and entertainment are your speed, cast your ballot in favor of your favorite local film festival. Love food and wine? Mention Forks and Corks in the 2016 competition. If you're more inclined to visit cultural festivals, let us know what you thought of RIAF this year or the Harvey Milk Festival.

Last year, reader Tim Holliday let us know why he supported Sarasota Chalk Festival for the win, "It is a great way to get a bunch of the community out to see some great art in a great setting with beautiful weather. I love the 3D art which is so cool. I like that the space was expanded and that there are local artists and kids involved as well."

The 2016 Best of SRQ Local polls are open now through February 15, 2016 at SRQMAG.COM/bestofsrq. Don't forget to vote for your favorite!
