As a Joint Commission accredited nonprofit providing an integrated system of mental health, substance abuse and criminal justice services serving the community, Sarasota-based Coastal Behavioral Healthcare (CBH) works to provide support and relief in one of the key cities in the nation suffering from the opioid epidemic. While CBH offers a variety of services and treatments, the Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Opioid and Alcohol Addiction is highly recommended. And since CBH began offering this program six months ago, there has been a steady increase in participants, highlighting the growing need for care in the Sarasota area. This program combines ongoing therapy and the use of vivitrol, a non-addictive antagonist therapy—or blocking medication—used to help people maintain abstinence while recovering from an opioid or alcohol dependence. The vivitrol injection lasts for 28 days and blocks the release of dopamine, helping patients prevent relapse and focus on counseling.
