Friday Weekend Edition
"It's a unique image, like a painting. I don't see the difference."
For most in the arts community, the name David Steiner belongs to a painter or perhaps one half of the dynamic duo behind State of the Arts Gallery on State Street, but with his first solo show at Gaze Modern, Steiner shows a different facet of his artist’s core—the photographer. Entitled Conspicio and opening at Gaze this Saturday at 5:30pm, the exhibition features 21 original photographs, a limited 12-print series and a mission to elevate the medium.
The son of a Kodak employee, perhaps the jump to photography was inevitable, and Steiner certainly expresses a noticeable ease and comfort with the medium. “It’s the same vocabulary—composition, color, texture,” he says. “It’s just a different brush.” And his love of the medium as fine art also comes informed by a love of its history as such, from the black and white beginnings and titans like Ansel Adams to the injection of color and Kodachrome, the form shepherded along to the halls of MoMA by the likes of William Eggleston and Stephen Shore, as an artistic equal to the paintings hanging before and after it. And while Steiner won’t place his name next to these greats, he will align with them in principle, as he pushes to see photography recognized and celebrated in Sarasota.
A Latin term meaning “to see” or “to gaze,” the title “encapsulates what photography means,” says Steiner, which is not “to stare” or “to study,” but rather something more instinctual and immediate—a visual resonance not easily quantified or replicated. Conspicio sees the artist working within the street photography tradition, capturing those candid moments in time, from a deflated basketball on the ground to criss-crossing construction cranes in the sky or billowing clouds dwarfing carefully strung power lines, the fluffy cumulus form somehow inspiring something almost like dread. “Any picture is better off with a narrative,” Steiner says, and his lens turns toward the quiet drama of the everyday and overlooked. With no beach scenes or sunsets in sight, there’s little to identify as Sarasota, but much to identify as human.
It’s all part of a greater push to see the medium get its due, the artist says, also announcing plans to dedicate part of State of the Arts’ Gallery C to continually exhibiting photography. “There’s no one in town who’s really elevated fine art photography,” says Steiner. And while he won’t claim to be the one to do it, he has no problem starting the conversation.
Opening this Saturday, February 16, with an opening reception at 5pm at Gaze Modern, Conspicio runs through February 24.

Forging a path beyond “First Fridays” or “Second Saturdays” or the unseemly desperation of “I-Know-It’s-A-School-Night-But-Please-Come Tuesdays,” Alfstad& Editions kicks off its “Most Fridays” concept tonight with a pop-up exhibition from experimental painter and sculptor Wolfgang Jennings. A one-night-only exhibition, the doors open at 5pm.
As the name would suggest, Most Fridays occur on, well, most Fridays, with Alfstad& Editions’ Chris Schumaker inviting artists working in a variety of media to take over the studio wall for an ephemeral art experience in a one-night pop-up show. Largely free from the restraints of the Gregorian Calendar, Schumaker hopes to see the series grow into something of a signature Rosemary attraction, riding a fine line between predictable regularity (“Fridays”) and spontaneous fun (“Most”).
Hailing from St. Pete and a student at Ringling College of Art and Design, Jennings brings something of a renegade explorer’s attitude to the six paintings and three sculptures on display tonight, and sometimes thinking outside the box means painting on it. Working on glass, Jennings wields his primary colors with confident strokes, making marks on both sides of the glass and even up and over the pristine white frame that holds it. And with a fair amount of remaining transparency remaining, the image is never really complete until it’s hanged. “The light interjects and creates a composition on the wall,” says Schumaker. “The work is contemporary—cutting edge—and the concepts are out there.”
And that’s not even getting into the sculptures, painstakingly created from layers of plexiglass, each holding individual drops of paint within carefully beveled divots, sandwiched in place to form a three-dimensional form suspended in the semi-transparent substrate.
The Wolfgang Jennings Pop-Up Show opens tonight at 5pm at Alfstad& Editions with the artist in attendance. As part of the “Most Fridays” series, a collectible print/poster will be available for sale.

A community collaboration brings Sanctuary: The Chakra Project to Grace Howl Contemporary Art tonight from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Inspired by Grace Howl’s vibrational chakra paintings and Paul Shuler’s healing chakra meditations, mindfulness master and yoga instructor Jamie Coffey will help bring this collaborative vision to fruition—an experience of visual art, live music, meditation and mindfulness.
The word “chakra” is Sanskrit for “wheel,” and the chakra system posits seven energy centers throughout the body, each with its own color and sound. Patrons will enter into a trio-sensory-stimulation, seeing Howl’s meditative paintings, hearing Shuler’s healing vibrations and actively moving through the space and meditating with a dedicated mantra for each chakra point. The combination of these layers are intended to alter the frequency of the visitor, as they will be enveloped in a space dedicated to awakening the energy within these centers.
On Saturday, Coffey will be leading a special Yoga Flow event in the space, integrating special mantras and moves to music. The class is open to roughly 20 participants. Registration is available on Coffey’s website.
Sarasota Contemporary Dance launches its In Studio Performance Series this Friday and Saturday, February 15–16. Designed to serve as an incubation platform for dance makers at varying stages in their career and creative processes, this series offers a rare experience for choreographers and the Sarasota community to be a part of works in their birthing stages, as well as a platform for more seasoned dance makers to present new and exciting work in an intimate setting.
The series begins tonight at 7pm at the SCD Home Studio in the Rosemary District, where Michael Foley Dance will premiere a new half-evening length dance work, Persephone in Hell, and perform on both nights. Persephone in Hell juxtaposes the Greek myth about the subjugation of a woman’s will in order to bring about the change of seasons through the lens of female power and agency. What would happen if all the Greek myths were wrong? Selected arias from operas composed by George Frideric Handel, sung by Nathalie Stutzman will underscore the dance performed by dancers Michael Foley, Heidi Brewer, Fernando Chonqui, Sadie Lehmker and Abigail Hinson. Friday will also feature new work from internationally recognized choreographer Pamela Pietro, while the Saturday performance will feature work from artist Megan Wors.
