"I'm not trying to prevent anyone from going to the convenient store to buy scratch-offs of pick numbers and go back to their car,"

- State Rep. Will Robinson, R-Bradenton

[State]  Robinson Rolls Dice On Another Lottery Bill
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

State Rep. Will Robinson, R-Bradenton, learned last session that one way to make people across the political spectrum anxious is to start messing with their lottery tickets. But he’s taking another shot at it this year.

Heading into his second session, Robinson filed a bill that will, among other things, require a warning label on tickets and marketing that says “Play Responsibly” and takes up five percent of the surface space.

“If Florida is going to have state-sanctioned gambling, which is what the Lottery is, then it is reasonable to have guideposts and restrictions,” said Robinson. Last year, Robinson passed a lottery bill in the House with relative ease, despite looking for a much longer label warning gambling could lead to addiction and compulsive behavior.  To get the bill through the Senate, that label was shorted to say either “Warning: Lottery Games may be addictive” or simply “Play Responsibly.”

Still, when state estimators calculated the bill would reduce education deposits by as much as $235 million, Gov. Ron DeSantis vetoed the legislation.

This year, Robinson hopes the more moderate label, which requires a “Play Responsibly” message already used abundantly in Florida Lottery marketing, he hopes to see to get the bill across the Governor’s desk.

He’s also got other provisions in the legislation as filed. He wants to prohibit online sales of lottery tickets. And he wants to outlaw the Florida Lottery from ever selling tickets based on the outcome of sporting events, something that could effectively turn the state agency into a bookie.

“I’m not trying to prevent anyone from going to the convenient store to buy scratch-offs of pick numbers and go back to their car,” Robinson said. “This is to prevent the expansion of gambling, whether through smart devices or sports gambling. I just want it crystal clear in the statute what the guideposts are for the Lottery.”

[Science]  Families Joined FabLab for Hands-On Cat Condo Makers Workshop

Fifteen family members took do-it-yourself to the next level during the Suncoast Science Center/Faulhaber Fab Lab’s recent Let’s Build: Cat Condo workshop. Armed with a prototype template plus supplies and tools at the ready, families were tasked with building the cat condo of their dreams. Families met over three consecutive Sundays to design, assemble and decorate their new digs using machines available in the Fab Lab. Cat Depot kicked off the workshop with goodie bags and two special kitten visitors that helped demonstrate the type of cat condo features participants should consider while designing their condos. The final workshop session was capped off with surprise awards including “Most Claw-ver Design”, “Condo with the Most Cat-titude” and “Most Purr-severance”, presented by Cat Depot Executive Director Jackie Ott-Jaakola.

“This was such an awesome project!” shared the Sandburg family. “This was the most fun we’ve ever had together,” added father-son duo, Ivan and Kamen.

The success of the workshop was largely due to the help of volunteer extraordinaire, Max Fischer. An Out-of-Door Academy freshman, Max was first introduced to the Fab Lab as a summer camp participant. He quickly signed up to be a volunteer after graduating from 8th grade and has been eager to help in any way possible since. From assisting with the rebranding of our Science Lending Library kits to teaching elementary students how to make an Archimedes screw during STEM Saturdays, Max has developed a varied skill set which he's always willing to share. If you're ever in the lab, you'll recognize him as the one jumping in to lend a helping hand.

The next “Let’s Build” workshop will challenge participants to build their own lawn games like cornhole, washer toss and even a life size set of dice. The workshop runs Fridays from 5-7:30pm on January 10, 17 and 24, just in time for Superbowl festivities. To learn more, visit https://suncoastscience.org/classes-workshops.

FabLab is always looking for student volunteers looking to explore new ideas and crafting environments for other students to learn, create and make. High school students looking to build new skills and make a difference while earning community service hours can apply for opportunities to fit a variety of schedules in a judgement-free zone. Now accepting volunteer applications for spring and summer opportunities. Go online to complete the form and plan to attend an upcoming information session: January 30, 3-5pm; February 1, 1-3pm; February 27, 3-5pm; and, February 29, 1-3pm.

[SOON]  MUSEUM: Manuel Álvarez Bravo: Specters and Parables , December 8 – March 1

Born and raised in Mexico City, where he spent most of his career, Manuel Álvarez Bravo (Mexican, 1902-2002) was one of the most important figures in 20th century Latin American photography. Although he took art classes at the Academy of San Carlos, his photography was mostly self-taught, but he was savvy to the emerging international artistic avant-garde. Considered to be one of the founders of modern photography, his work extends from the late 1920s to the 1900s. He was a key figure from the period following the Mexican Revolution—often called the Mexican Renaissance—in which arts and literature flourished. This “Renaissance” owed to the happy—though not always tranquil—marriage between a desire for modernization and the search for an authentic national identity with Mexican roots, in which archaeology, history and ethnology played an important role. Support for this exhibition has been provided, in part, by the Ringling Endowment at the Florida State University Foundation. Paid for in part by Sarasota County Tourist Development Tax Revenues.

[SOON]  MUSEUM: Syd Solomon: Concealed and Revealed , December 15 – April 26

Concealed and Revealed offers a unique selection of paintings by the artist, along with numerous objects from the Solomon Archive on view for the first time. Syd Solomon (American, 1917-2004) described himself as an “Abstract Impressionist” alluding to the fact that his work infused impressionism into the processes, scale and concepts of Abstract Expressionism. Solomon moved to Sarasota in 1946 with his wife Annie. His was the first work of contemporary art to be collected by The Ringling in 1962. His paintings were greatly influenced by climatic factors and reveal a fascination and concern for Florida’s aquatic environment. Solomon incorporated his experience as a camouflage designer during World War II into his painting. It is not well-known that he was also an accomplished graphic artist, who in his early years designed commercial signage for prominent hotels and businesses in Sarasota. Like his work in camouflage, Solomon’s calligraphic skill was essential to the development of his later gestural abstraction.

Syd Solomon: Concealed and Revealed is presented in partnership with the Estate of Syd Solomon and is accompanied by a 96-page publication with essays by former curator at The Ringling Michael Auping, George S. Bolge, Dr. Gail Levin, and Mike Solomon. The exhibition will include artworks from private collections and The Ringling’s permanent collection.
