"We need to shift our mindsets as a nation around the way we see anxiety and other so-called negative emotions."

- Marc Brackett, Ph.D Psychologist and Best-Selling Author of Permission to Feel

-1592 Wood Fired Kitchen & Cocktails, previously known as Avli Mess Hall, presents their version of the Mexican paloma cocktail.
[Cocktails]  Smoke, Spice and a Name Change
Andrew Fabian, andrew.fabian@srqme.com

After a legal battle with a petty restaurant in Chicago, Avli Mess Hall was forced to change its name. It is now called 1592 Wood Fired Kitchen & Cocktails. “It’s unbelievable,” says co-owner Edward Zaki, “’avli’ just means open courtyard—how can you own a word for courtyard?”

The pettiness is enough to require a stiff drink.

Fortunately, the restaurant formerly known as Avli Mess Hall has a menu of delicious cocktails that can assuage any irritation at that pettiness, and if one is looking to fight fiery feelings with fiery drink, the ‘some like it hot’ is a powerful weapon. An elevated take on the popular Mexican cocktail known as paloma, the drink features Se Busca Mezcal Reposado shaken with grapefruit juice, lime, soda and simple syrup. The aged mezcal adds a richness of smoky flavor that most tequilas simply lack, while the grapefruit and simple syrup help accentuate the fruity notes present in the liquor. As usual, a salt rim is optional, but 1592 goes a step further and adds chili powder. The result is a glass of liquid smoke and spice that still manages by some mysterious alchemy to refresh. It pairs exceptionally well with the spicy feta spread, but keep a glass of ice water nearby.

[Brunch Food]  Steak and Eggs for When You're Feeling Fancy and Famished
Ariel Chates, ariel.chates@srqme.com

The best thing about brunch besides it being socially acceptable to drink champagne at 10am, is the list of menu items to choose from suddenly doubles. Not only are you afforded the possibilities of breakfast, but lunch is now on the table as well. What to do, however, when you’re craving not only breakfast or lunch but also perhaps dinner? Steak and eggs my friend. The beautiful love child of the am and pm culinary world, steak and eggs is arguably the perfect meal.

It’s the prince and the pauper of dishes letting you have eggs cooked your way like any good diner worth its salt, but with the luxurious bonus of a ‘usually saved for special occasions’ steak. Most spots pile a thin piece of meat over potatoes and call it a day, but Station 400 on Tamiami is plating up a slightly more elevated version of this roadside favorite. Served alongside roasted plum tomatoes, arugula salad and topped with a basil hollandaise sauce, the assembly screams elegance while the mound of hashbrowns and buttered toast brings you back to earth. With a smattering of mimosa choices to pair (I’d suggest the Blood Orange Hibiscus) this is the spot when you’re craving classic breakfast with some extra oomph.

Station 400 is open 7 days a week 7:30am-2:30pm.

*Please forgive the bite of toast missing, I was starving.

[Live Events Industry]  Florida Studio Theatre Announces to Join The Red Alert Day of Action

Florida Studio Theatre (FST) announces that it will join The Red Alert Day of Action organized by We Make Events– North America, a campaign advocating for governmental support for the live events industry. Since FST was forced to close its doors on March 15, 2020, the nonprofit theatre has cancelled its Summer Mainstage and Cabaret Seasons, and postponed its 2020-2021 Winter Season until early next year. This cancelled programming is projected to cost the theatre over $1.5 million in lost revenue. The Red Alert Day of Action takes place on September 1, uniting over 1,000 companies in an effort to urge Congress to promptly pass the RESTART Act, giving economic relief to small and mid-sized businesses hit hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic.

[Donation]  $18,000 Donation for Clean and Worry Free Flooring in the Gan at Temple Sinai

Long time Temple Sinai members, the Greenbaum and Segal families of Sarasota Wholesale Tile Supply’s, generously donated all new luxury Vinyl flooring which has been placed in Temple Sinai’s Gan and Religious School. Having luxury vinyl flooring eliminates the need for carpet and helps maintain a pristine and clean environment. The $18,000 donation benefits all who walk in our temple. As the Director of the Gan, Laura Freedman states: “The new flooring allows for easier cleaning and disinfecting in the preschool classrooms. The new CDC recommendations suggest a regular periodic cleaning during the class day.  These floors give our custodial staff the ability to clean/disinfect thoroughly and quickly.” More than adding enhanced, easy to clean flooring during Covid19, these families demonstrated that giving and donating is always virtuous and filled with love.

[SOON]  MUSEUM: Small Wonders: Insects in Focus at The Bishop , June 17 – October 20, Museum hours.

Insects inhabit every domain of our daily lives, performing essential functions that balance our fragile ecosystem on Earth — functions that often go unnoticed because of their small size or scale. Now, using cutting-edge technology and custom methods that put tiny insects on a human scale, artist and photographer Bob Sober allows visitors to see the patterns, textures, colors and details that have always been present, but too small to appreciate in The Bishop’s newest special exhibition: Small Wonders: Insects in Focus.

Creating human-scale images of insects, with resolution so high that every hair, dimple and tiny structure is clearly revealed, was impossible prior to the technological advancements of the past 10 years. Now, Sober’s skills allow us to see the intersection of natural science and art in the smooth metallic finishes and heavily stippled textures, strange body shapes, delicate wing structures and beautifully engineered body components in this series of 30 images that will are on display in the Museum’s second-floor Rincon Gallery and throughout the Museum.

Small Wonders: Insects in Focus features 30 of Sober’s spectacular images and viewers will find themselves at the intersection of art and science. The exhibition, which is included in the cost of admission, is organized by ExhibitsUSA, a program of Mid-America Arts Alliance and will be open at The Bishop through October 20.

[SOON]  MUSEUM: Myakka River: A Florida Treasure at The Bishop , February 7 – September 6, Museum hours.

Ultra-white sand beaches and magnificent sunsets have long defined our region, but just nine miles east of I-75 you’ll find an environment just as alluring, exotic and primal at the Myakka River State Park.  For more than 20 years, Clyde Butcher has explored the deeper regions of Myakka and spent seasons experiencing its changes and its diverse ecosystems. Designated as a Florida Wild and Scenic River, the tannic waters flow through bottomland swamp and freshwater marsh spilling into lakes and sinkholes. Alligators, turtles and cottonmouths swim in the river. Herons, cranes and limpkins strut through its shallows, feeding in the muck. In the rainy season, the river rises and floods. In the dry months, the river shrinks and wildlife once again lines the banks of the Myakka River.  Myakka River: A Florida Treasure features large-format, amazing photographs taken by world-renowned landscape photographer Clyde Butcher, known as the “Ansel Adams of Florida.”  The special exhibition will remain open through September 6, 2020. Visiting is included in the price of admission.
