More than 70% of voters who cast ballots in the August primary in Sarasota or Manatee counties did so by sending their vote in the mail or dropping it off in a dropbox. It’s a phenomenon sure to be discussed at a Where The Votes Are discussion being held online by SRQ MEDIA this morning.
That’s a phenomenal migration to the mailboxes that portends dramatically different voter behavior during the presidential election in November as a pandemic rages on.
For those populations especially at risk from the effects of COVID-19, there was an even greater interest in voting by mail. Nearly 79% of voters in the 70s voted by mail, compared to less than 15% who cast ballots at the polls. For voters in their 90s, nearly 93% voted by mail and less than 6% went to the polls.
But there was a definite partisan split to absentee voting as well. While more than 84% of Democrats in the region sent their ballot by post, only around 56% of Republicans did so. Roughly a third of GOP votes cast their ballots on Election Day, while under 11% of Democrats dared venture to their precinct. Independent voters didn’t go the mail route by quite as high a percentage as Dems, but it was close, with nearly 81% choosing to vote by mail and just over 14% waiting until the day of the election.
Older voters continue to dominate at the polls in Sarasota and Manatee. But returns from the Aug. 18 primary show that gap is less pronounced that in the past.
In the two county area, roughly the same number of voters turned out who were under 40 (26,299) as who were over 80 (26,649). At the same time, older voters both outnumber and outperform younger ones in both counties. Voters in the 70s had a turnout of greater than 47% in the August election within the two-county area, anumber down nearly 2% from the 2018 primary but still nearly double the under 25% turnout for voters in their 50s. Voters in their 20s had a turnout in the region of less than 9%
And of course, there’s a greater number of older voters in the retiree-rich area. The region is home to nearly 45,000 voters in their 70s, but only around 29,000 voters in their 20s.

Personalized Estate Liquidation (PEL) Benefiting Youth, Inc., presented Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County with a $65,000 gift to support academic enrichment programs and the renovation of a classroom at the organization’s Irving and Marilyn Naiditch Campus, home of the Roy McBean Boys & Girls Club, on 21st Ave. in Sarasota. This award is the second gift in support of the major capital expansion and remodel project, joining Marilyn Naiditch’s $1 million lead gift made in honor of her late husband and long-time Boys & Girls Clubs Board member Irving Naiditch. Funding from PEL will ensure thousands of children and teens in the underserved Newtown neighborhood have access to award-winning youth-development programs for years to come. “PEL’s demonstrated commitment to our community’s future leaders enables our organization to provide greater opportunities for them to achieve their full potential,” said Bill Sadlo, President/CEO at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County. “This gift will connect youth to educational resources, inspire life-long learning in a state-of-the-art classroom and have long-term impact.”
Morton’s Gourmet Market has donated $25,000 to All Faiths Food Bank of Sarasota County to help those in most need at this time. This donation will be part of a match $500,000 gift from the Joe and Mary Kay Henson Family Fund and an additional $100,000 from an anonymous donor through the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, all donations made will be matched up to $600,000. “Morton’s contribution towards our current matching gift opportunity is greatly appreciated during this time of increased need. COVID-19 has created its own pandemic of hunger in our community, as high unemployment rates continue and those affected are left with unknown futures," says Sandra Frank CEO of All Faiths Food Bank. Morton’s support will help us as we continue to provide food and assistance to those struggling the most.”
Launching a new fiscal year, The Glasser/Schoenbaum Human Services Center is welcoming 6 new members to its board: Knickole Barger Stone, Nick Gladding, Nate Jacobs, Chris Johnson, Nikki Taylor, and Nick Zennario. The School Board of Manatee County is seeking one civic-minded citizen to serve as member of the Audit Committee for a three-year term. The application window for the second round of Manatee CARES Act funding for local small businesses, nonprofit agencies and community organizations will close temporarily at noon on Friday to allow staff to review pending applications. Applications for Round 3 of the Manatee CARES Housing Assistance Program, which provides rent and mortgage assistance to residents affected by the coronavirus, close at 5pm on Monday, September 7.

Inpatient visitation will resume at Manatee Memorial Hospital, starting Tuesday, September 8 at 12:00 p.m. Manatee Memorial Hospital will allow one visitor, age 18 or older to visit patients on the Nursing Inpatient Units from 12pm - 6pm, each day. Patients who are positive for COVID-19 or are being tested for COVID-19 will not be allowed visitors.
Most Sarasota County Government offices, including the Administration Center, 1660 Ringling Blvd., and the Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County will be closed Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day. All Sarasota County libraries, Historical Resources and recreation centers will be closed and Sarasota County Area Transit will not operate that day. However, the Siesta Key Breeze will operate Sept. 7 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on a regular Monday schedule. The UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County offices will also be closed for the holiday. All solid waste facilities will be closed for the holiday, including the Central County Landfill, 4000 Knights Trail Road, Nokomis; the Citizen's Convenience Center, 4010 Knights Trail Road, Nokomis; and the Chemical Collection Centers, 250 S. Jackson Road, Venice and 8750 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota. All trash, recycling and yard waste collection services will be delayed by one day due to the holiday.
