"Floridians and Americans, I think, are rightfully concerned with what we see everyday on TV."

[Politics]  Fairey, Gregory reach out to voters in District 73
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

The first time David Fairey stood roadside waving signs and trying to convince voters in Lakewood Ranch and east Manatee to vote Democrat, he expected a lot of roadside curses and obscene gestures. There’s always a few, of course, but he said there’s also a surprising amount of support for his state House candidacy.

“A lot of Republicans are feeling dismayed at how marginalized they feel,” he said. “I’m not saying they will all vote for me,  but they feel discouraged by what they have seen. I feel like we are pulling our weight.”

He’s challenging state Rep. Tommy Gregory, R-Sarasota, and believes dissatisfaction with the GOP in Washington and Tallahassee may produce some surprising results in House District 73.

Gregory, for his part, feels confident but takes nothing for granted. He disputes notions Republican majorities in the Florida Legislature ignore voter needs. Rather, as the state goes through a pandemic-led recession, he feels responsible maintenance of state reserves helped Florida endure the financial challenges this year better than most. But he knows there’s work to do.

“We have 750,000 Floridians unemployed right now, and we’ve got to figure a way to get the economy moving safely,” he said.

As expected, Gregory and Fairey have different ideas what should be done. Gregory leads a political committee fighting passage of a minimum wage increase on the ballot in November. Fairey said improved wages would help Florida tremendously and supports the constitutional amendment.

“All that money goes right back into the local economy,” Fairey said, "and especially with all this unemployment and a broken system, people desperately need that.”

The district, regardless of roadside response to sign waving, should be an easy hold for Republicans. Gregory won the seat in 2018 with 61.9% of the vote. But he’s still knocking on doors and campaigning hard, he said, saying that’s the best way legislators have to hear constituent concerns. He feels voters are on his side. And they don’t like the message the left is selling right now.

“Floridians and Americans, I think, are rightfully concerned with what we see everyday on TV,” he said. “Peaceful protests that turn into violent criminal affairs, the disrespect shown to law enforcement. They are worried and concerned about the future of our country.”

Voters in House District 73, which covers part of east Manatee and Sarasota county, will decide between Gregory and Fairey on Nov. 3.

[New Grant]  Designing Women Boutique Provides Essential Support for Local Parkinson's Community

Neuro Challenge Foundation for Parkinson’s received a grant from Designing Women Boutique in Sarasota, FL to help provide no-cost essential services annually to thousands of people with Parkinson’s and their caregivers in Sarasota County.  A grant from Designing Women Boutique will allow Neuro Challenge to meet the needs of the Parkinson’s community by offering education, therapeutic and support programs via online platforms and tele-care advising by the Neuro Challenge Care Advisor team.

There are over 3,000 people in Sarasota County diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and for every diagnosis there is a caregiver or family who also needs education and support.  It’s important that people with Parkinson’s and their caregivers know they are not alone in their journey and that journey starts with finding the right care, support and information to help them become self-sufficient in managing every aspect of the disease: physically, psychologically and emotionally.

Parkinson’s disease exacerbates isolation, and it is crucial that the Parkinson’s community stay connected and have access to the latest information and ongoing emotional support during this COVID-19 pandemic.  While stressful for most, social distancing may be detrimental for people with PD and their caregivers.  Parkinson’s increases the feeling of isolation, but Neuro Challenge programs promote self-sufficiency and socialization for both the person with PD and their caregiver – which is especially important during this time of sheltering in place.

During the COVID-19 crisis, Neuro Challenge quickly responded to create over 40 virtual programs, offer a wide variety of classes designed specifically for persons with PD and provide programs easily accessible by everyone from the comfort and safety of home. Movement classes are an example of critical online services offered by Neuro Challenge for PD families.   Regular exercise is crucial for those living with Parkinson’s and is a cornerstone for symptom management, motor function and well-being.  Virtual access to important programs is more critical than ever before, particularly for those with physical limitations or those living in rural areas of Manatee County.

“With the financial support from Designing Women Boutique, Neuro Challenge will continue uninterrupted tele-care advising and essential programs at a time when social distancing can be particularly stressful for people with Parkinson’s and their caregivers.  We are extremely grateful for our partnership with Designing Women Boutique which will provide essential services to the Sarasota County Parkinson’s community today,” said Robyn Faucy-Washington, CEO of Neuro Challenge Foundation.

[SOON]  MUSEUM: Small Wonders: Insects in Focus at The Bishop , June 17 – October 20, Museum hours.

Insects inhabit every domain of our daily lives, performing essential functions that balance our fragile ecosystem on Earth — functions that often go unnoticed because of their small size or scale. Now, using cutting-edge technology and custom methods that put tiny insects on a human scale, artist and photographer Bob Sober allows visitors to see the patterns, textures, colors and details that have always been present, but too small to appreciate in The Bishop’s newest special exhibition: Small Wonders: Insects in Focus.

Creating human-scale images of insects, with resolution so high that every hair, dimple and tiny structure is clearly revealed, was impossible prior to the technological advancements of the past 10 years. Now, Sober’s skills allow us to see the intersection of natural science and art in the smooth metallic finishes and heavily stippled textures, strange body shapes, delicate wing structures and beautifully engineered body components in this series of 30 images that will are on display in the Museum’s second-floor Rincon Gallery and throughout the Museum.

Small Wonders: Insects in Focus features 30 of Sober’s spectacular images and viewers will find themselves at the intersection of art and science. The exhibition, which is included in the cost of admission, is organized by ExhibitsUSA, a program of Mid-America Arts Alliance and will be open at The Bishop through October 20.
