[Innovation]  EDC Recognizes Hoyt, Imerza and Innovation Station Leaders
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

The Economic Development Corporation of Sarasota County spotlighted some of the region’s lauded business leaders at a virtual awards ceremony on Friday. There, Hoyt Architect founder Gary Hoyt and Imerza Chief Technology Officer Dorian Vee received awards for innovation in business, while Al Carlson, director of the University of Florida Innovation Station, was honored for business leadership.

Imerza, a virtual reality company born from Hoyt Architect Lab, has used 3-D animation and virtual reality technology to revolutionize such needs as creating accurate renderings for buildings. The multidisciplinary studio continues to break ground with interactive applications for urban design and real estate development. Locally, the company received attention for services like offering clients views for units in BLVD and other high-rise development, where the use of computer renderings and drone cameras, employed alongside virtual reality tools, allowed individuals to “walk” through units on various levels of a building while it was still under construction.

Hoyt and Vee together accepted the 2020 Ringling College Innovation by Design Award. “We are setting new standards in visual and experiential communication while transforming our clients’ businesses processes and efficiency,” Hoyt said. “At our core, we are problems solvers, continually exploring bleeding edge software and hardware technologies to create impactful solutions to meet industry needs.”

Vee suggested it was a particular honor to win the Ringling College award. The company has tapped talent from the institution, which has internationally renown programs in VR and digital animation. “Sarasota has been an excellent location to start a tech company, and Ringling has a lot to do with that,” Vee said.

As for Carlson, he was honored with the 2020 Clyde Nixon Business Leadership Award, a special recognition since the award was named for Sun Hydraulics founder Clyde Nixon. Before taking on his current role at UF’s engineering extension program, opened in Sarasota in 2016, Carlson worked 16 years as CEO of the regional manufacturer.

““I am honored to have been named the 2020 Clyde Nixon award recipient. Having worked with Clyde for 20 years, I learned firsthand how important leadership is to an organization's success,” Carlson said.

[Caldwell Trust Company]  A Fiduciary Family

From our stunning historic office in downtown Sarasota, our experts at Caldwell Trust Company (CTC) are dedicated to instilling peace of mind in our clients when it comes to money matters. Founded in 1993 by Roland G. Caldwell, we are an independent trust company with more than 25 years of experience and $1.2 billion in assets under management. We have always believed that, when taking care of our clients’ financial needs, “it’s a relationship, not a transaction.”

Our founder, Roland G. Caldwell, once described the job of fiduciary as a “noble calling.” When he passed the CEO torch to his son, R.G. “Kelly” Caldwell Jr., in 2007, that philosophy only grew. And we continue to be proud every year that we are serving our clients with loyalty and integrity—creating bonds that will last for generations. “I stand on my dad’s shoulders,” Kelly Caldwell says. “And I hope every generation makes our company better.”

Our team is anything but conventional. Unlike larger financial organizations, where traditional trust services are often abandoned in favor of brokerage and mutual fund-type activities, we offer the kind of one-on-one support and compassion that only a small specialty firm can provide. We are not in the business of selling products or making commissions for our own gain. And, because we are a family company, we make it a priority to treat every client like family.

“As clients get up in age and start to plan for who is going to financially take care of their families, that’s when a trust company like ours really shines,” Caldwell says. “If you’re entrusting someone like us to take care of your family, you want to know that we’re going to be around for a long time and that we’re not going to sell out. Big banks go through mergers and, if you’re in their trust department, you just get swallowed up. But we want our clients to know we’re not going away.”

Clients know. They trust. They connect.

[SOON]  GALLERY: Ringling College: Sally Pettibon: Personal Geography , October 19 – December 11

"Personal Geography represents the connection I feel for my hometown of What Cheer, Iowa. This small town with its boarded-up buildings and a melancholy that permeates the streets holds so many memories of my early life. Although I lived there for only five years, it has a hold on me that’s difficult to explain. Perhaps it’s my inherent need to belong somewhere, perhaps it’s the memories of my family who are no longer alive, or maybe it’s the place itself with its rolling hills, verdant cornfields and own distinct quality of light. More likely it’s my memory of a place where both my father and I were born, where my Grandparents and Great-Grandparents lived nearby. The map of my life extends quite far, I lived in four different states by the time I was 16. But it’s this tiny forgotten town that has a hold on me both temporal and spiritual that I don’t fully understand. Combining family snapshots with photographs I have taken in What Cheer since the 1970’s Personal Geography explores the impermanence of history and memory and the permanence of place." This exhibition is open by appointment only. Please email galleries@ringling.edu to request an appointment. This exhibit began at the Larry R. Thompson Academic Center on October 19, 2020 and will end on December 11, 2020, during museum hours.
