[Sandwiches]  Location, Location, Location; Also Sandwich
Andrew Fabian, andrew.fabian@srqme.com

As the world slowly emerges from its season of anxiety and Sarasotans find themselves in the long-awaited prime of the region’s sunny Spring, outdoor dining still retains some of the gravity of its COVID-safe conditions. Lots of restaurants tried their best to leverage their sidewalk real estate, but others already had long-running reputations for their al fresco cheer. Among those establishments is Café in the Park.

Situated on the popular Payne Park grounds in downtown, the café’s terrace offers ample shade to catch a gentle breeze and, at least for a moment, pretend that the pandemic is entirely in the rearview mirror. And yesterday’s smoked turkey and brie sandwich special presented the lunch crowd with a bright, approachable and classy option to reinforce the optimism of the season. The formula was simple—smoked turkey, brie cheese, green apple slices, arugula and raspberry jam layered between a French baguette, then toasted. The smokiness of the turkey was just noticeable above the sweetness of the apple slices and jam, while the brie added savory richness. The arugula, with its subtle peppery notes, added a nice splash of green and a touch of snap to the bite experience.

At Café in the Park, it’s not all location, location, location. The café is open seven days a week from 11 am to 6 pm, till 9:30 pm on Fridays. This weeks’ forecast is: go eat outside.

[German Food]  Siegfried's Potato Paradise
Ariel Chates, ariel.chates@srqme.com

Sat under a canopy of twinkle lights inside a private gazebo is the table to request at Seigfried’s Restaurant and Biergarten. It’s hard not to fall under the spell of such the delightfully magical location tucked off Fruitville Road, but the steller food stole the show.

While some shop by the saying, “If you love it buy it in every color,” I tend to order to the tune of, “If you can’t decide, order it all.” A refurbished mini-kitchen operating out of a food truck/van/trailer hybrid cranks away outside whipping up German goodness. A trio fit for carnivorous diners, Nurnberger Bratwurst mit Kartoffelpuree und Saurkraut, Rheinischer Sauerbraten and Wiener Schnitzel mit Omas Karoffelsalat arrived in heaping plates to the table.

Kartoffelpuree, a much more fun way to say mashed potatoes, is served alongside two grilled bratwurst and housemade sauerkraut with a delicious brown gravy. Rich, decadent and stick to your ribs, this dish reminds us Americans that sausage should not be just for breakfast. The Sauerbraten is a labor-intensive delicacy of beef eye round marinated in weeks with vinegar to tenderize and accompanied by potato dumplings and warm red cabbage. The rich gravy with raisins was the perfect sweet and tangy accompaniment to the vinegar braised meat and fluffy dumplings.

The star of the show was the Wiener Schnitzel. An unbeatable cut of super thin veal fried to perfection and paired with, but of course, another play on everyone’s favorite vegetable, the potato. This time as Grandma’s warm bavarian potato salad which puts any store bought mushy white side-dish to shame. Finished with lemon and cranberry sauce for some needed brightness it’s about as pitch perfect a cozy meal as you can get. Wash it all down with a German ale listening to European pop music streaming through the garden and you might be fooled into thinking you’ve swapped this beach town for Bavaria.

Siegfried’s is open Wednesday through Sunday from 4pm to 10pm.

For reservations call 941-330-9330 or email info@siegfrieds-restaurant.com.

[Recognition]  Manatee County Veterans Services Celebrating Local Women Veterans

The Manatee County Veterans Services Division is celebrating Woman Veterans during the week of March 14 to 20, 2021, by showcasing on social media a small sampling of the nearly 4,000 who live in Manatee County. Renee Medina, Senior Veterans Services Counselor, said their Veterans Services team has found that unlike their male counterparts, female Veterans are much less likely to seek other Veterans, join Veteran-related clubs or get support. They are also less identifiable by not donning Veterans hats or other attire. Medina said, “Female veterans are much less likely to consider themselves Veterans as well as find out the benefits they have earned with their service. We believe by spotlighting these wonderful women, it will help encourage other female Veterans to feel proud, equal and encourage any who may be hesitant to reach out to our office."

Balukjian will be in conversation with Bookstore1’s Event Manager and baseball fan, Elsie Souza. The Wax Pack was supposed to be a book about baseball, the story of an 11,341-mile road trip to track down all the players in a pack of 1986 baseball cards to find out what happens when the spotlight goes out. It turned into something much bigger, as the players opened up about their lives off the field, from estranged fathers to addiction to divorce. The Wax Pack ends up being about vulnerability, about growing up, and about learning to navigate our relationship with fear. You'll realize you have a lot more in common with Major League ballplayers than you ever thought possible.

[SOON]  GALLERY: Art Uptown Gallery: Lyrical Bronze by James Gabbert , February 27 – March 26, Gallery hours.

James Gabbert, Art Uptown’s March solo artist, presents a series of lyrical, flowing, bronze sculptures that reinterpret the human figure and nearly defy gravity.  The sculptures’ sinuous forms and rich tones cut through space, inviting the viewer to explore every expression.  As the artist explains, “I strive to have each sculpture be beautiful from every angle.  As I see it, sculpture is really four-dimensional.  By walking around the form, the dimension of time transforms the piece with each new view.” James continues to ground his work in the examination of the human figure, which is relatable to everyone. However, his imagination moves the figure into complex visual and spatial situations, often connecting the forms with natural forces. The relationship and tension between the two, captured in bronze, provides a powerful aesthetic experience. James says, “I create my art to lift and enlighten the spirit, to touch the heart, to awaken the intellect. I intend for my art to be provocative, that is, to provoke the mind, heart or spirit to experience something new or rekindle something forgotten.” Explore James Gabbert’s bronze collection at Art Uptown, located at 1367 Main Street, open Monday through Friday, 11am to 5pm, Saturday, 11am to 3pm and Sunday, noon to 5pm.  Meet the artist during Saturday gallery hours on February 27 and March 6. Private appointments can be arranged by calling 914.955.5409. The gallery continues its commitment to visitor and staff safety by the use of masks, sanitizer, frequent cleaning and social distancing.
