[Grant Awarded]  Suncoast Black Arts Collaborative Receives Grant from Masala Giving Circle for its “Art in Black” Initiative

Michéle Des Verney Redwine, the founder of the Suncoast Black Arts Collaborative (SBAC), announced that the nonprofit was recently awarded a $10,000 grant from the Masala Giving Circle for its “Art in Black” initiative. According to Redwine, the program was created to help students of color at Booker Middle and High schools explore their creative talents. The program features artist visits to the schools and exhibitions of the students’ works. Masala Giving Circle’s vision is to enhance culturally vibrant and thriving African American/Black communities. Its mission is to promote economic and personal empowerment through financial support for programs and initiatives that benefit African American/Black communities in Sarasota and Manatee counties.

[Grant Awarded]  The Perlman Music Program Suncoast Receives $10,000 Grant from The Exchange to Support its 2022-2023 Programming

The Perlman Music Program Suncoast (Perlman Suncoast) was awarded a grant in the amount of $10,000 by The Exchange at a ceremony held at its store on June, 9, 2022. These funds will help support outreach programs presented by Perlman Suncoast throughout the 2022-2023 Season: PMP Alumni: In Schools, PMP Alumni: Around Town, Super Strings and the annual Celebration Concert. Each year, Perlman Suncoast presents education outreach programs in Sarasota and Manatee counties featuring graduates of The Perlman Music Program (PMP). PMP Alumni: In Schools brings alumni into elementary, middle and high schools, as well as special education schools and after-school programs, to educate and interact with students and teachers. PMP Alumni: Around Town offers low-cost performances and events in collaboration with local community venues and organizations. Super Strings provides young string musicians, ages 8-18, from across the state of Florida the opportunity to perform with the PMP String Orchestra during the PMP Winter Residency, under the baton of Itzhak Perlman. The annual Celebration Concert is the culmination of the PMP Winter Residency, and features, in concert, the PMP Chorus led by Chorus Master Patrick Romano, and the PMP String Orchestra conducted by Itzhak Perlman. The Exchange has awarded over $9 million in arts-related grants and scholarships since its inception in 1962 to support organizations and individuals in Manatee and Sarasota counties. With more than 260 volunteers and 5,000+ consignors, all of the scholarship and grant monies are generated through sales at their retail store in Sarasota. 

[Recognition Given]  SRQ Magazine Readers Name Resilient Retreat Best Nonprofit Health Organization Resilient Retreat also takes 2nd Place for Best Wellness Center

Resilient Retreat was named best nonprofit health organization by readers of SRQ Magazine in their April “Best of Local” issue. Resilient Retreat also picked up 2ndplace for Best Wellness Center. Every year, the magazine invites its readers to nominate locally owned businesses and individuals they believe are worthy of “best of” ratings in restaurants, dining, food, home and design, philanthropy, real estate, consumer services, professional services, community-wide leadership, health, beauty, and wellness.

“We especially value these two recognitions from SRQ Magazine because they reflect the experiences and preferences of our area residents,” said Lisa Intagliata, Resilient Retreat Executive Director. “That we’ve been recognized in the categories of best nonprofit health organization and best wellness center is a wonderful reflection of our mission to provide a place for healing and the programs to generate wellbeing in body, mind and spirit.” 

[Scholarships Awarded]  Congratulations to BGCSDC Senior Graduates

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties celebrated 90 graduating seniors from local high schools at the annual Senior Celebration on Thursday, June 9, 2022. Seniors were joined by family and friends, and supported by members of the community such as Assistant Superintendent and Chief Academic Officer, Chris Renouf; Secondary Schools Executive Director, Steve Cantees; North Port High School Principal, Shannon Fusco; Riverview High School Principal, Erin Del Castillo; Sarasota High School Principal, David Jones; and Sarasota Military Academy Head of School, Colonel Fredrick Fout. The event was held in the Dick Vitale Sports and Fitness Center at the Lee Wetherington Club. The 2022 graduating class went above and beyond in their academic achievements and are outstanding examples of what hard work and determination can do in achieving their goals. The evening recognized 17 graduating seniors who have been selected to receive scholarship awards, including the Shannon Staub Excellence in Leadership Award, The Club’s Post-Secondary Transition Scholarship, the Matthew A. Knight Foundation Scholarship, the Robert and Patricia Gussin Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties Endowed Scholarship at Duquesne University, the Steven and Marjolaine Townsend Scholarship, and Youth of the Year Scholarship. Since their first scholarship in 2018, Steve and Marjolaine Townsend have awarded over 47 scholarships to Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties’ youth.  

[Scholarships Awarded]  The Education Foundation of Sarasota County Announces 32 Recipients of its New Jumpstart Your Future! Scholarships

The Education Foundation is proud to announce 32 recipients of its new Jumpstart Your Future! scholarships. These remarkable students will receive one-year Florida Prepaid College Foundation scholarships, valued at more than $110,000, which will cover 30 credit hours at the Florida state college tuition rate. All 32 students, in addition to receiving the scholarship, will attend three workshops in areas such as financial aid, life skills, and career explorations. These workshops will help students prepare for life after high school. The Education Foundation launched Jumpstart Your Future! scholarships in February of this year through the creation of the Shanney / Richardson Scholarship Fund. Thanks to generous donor support and a partnership with the Florida Prepaid College Foundation, the Education Foundation can help more low-income students pursue educational goals after high school.

[Music Events]  St. Armands Circle Business Improvement District Announces Summer Concert Series

The St. Armands Circle Business Improvement District (BID) has announced the event dates for its upcoming Summer Concert Series. On select Saturdays throughout the summer from July to September, residents and visitors are invited to enjoy this free monthly series featuring various jazz performers. The Summer Concert Series is a joint effort by the St. Armands Circle BID and the City of Sarasota and builds on the dynamic event's programming blossoming throughout the city. Families, friends, and guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for a family-friendly, jazzy trio of shows featuring: Jazz on the Circle – Saturday, July 9, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; JAC of All Trades - Saturday, Aug. 13, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Big Band Concert – Saturday, Sept. 17, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The July 9th event kicks off the series with Hot Tonic, a jazz ensemble that specializes in original jazz arrangements of popular songs. Fronted by upright bassist/vocalist Victoria Woods and guitar virtuoso Josh Hindmarsh, Hot Tonic breathes new life into old hits. August 13th features Jac of All Trades, the high-energy outfit of former American Idol finalist, Jonathan Cortez. Cortez blends his world-class voice with a mixture of live instrumentation and backing tracks to pack an arena-sized punch into his performance. Closing out the series on Saturday, September 13th is the Sarasota Jazz Project, a 17-piece jazz band comprised of some of the region’s finest musicians. Featuring a conductor and full horn section, the band will evoke all the swing of the 1930s Jazz Era. And thanks in part to a large event tent and a covered stage, the event is designed to provide entertainment in case of minor inclement weather.

[Grand Opening]  Galen College of Nursing and HCA Florida Healthcare Host Grand Opening Event At New Sarasota Campus

This Wednesday, June 15, 2022, Galen College of Nursing and HCA Florida Healthcare are hosting a grand opening event at the new campus located on 501 N. Cattleman Road. With over 22,700-square-feet, Galen College of Nursing’s new Sarasota campus is one of the area’s most unique educational facilities dedicated solely to nursing. The campus opened its doors in March 2022 for virtual courses and in-person instruction will begin in July 2022 to better meet the ongoing high demand for nurses. The impressive facility features high-level clinical-learning labs, active-learning classrooms, an advanced simulation hospital, and more. The grand opening ceremony features a ribbon-cutting and an opportunity for media, community leaders, future students, and alumni to explore the grounds and experience simulated lab demonstrations. The schedule is as follows: 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. Tours and Simulation Demonstrations; 5:30 - 5:50 p.m. Ribbon Cutting Ceremony; 5:50 - 6:30 p.m. Tours and Demonstrations.

Laughing Matters, FST’s hit musical sketch comedy show, is back for round six! And this time, nothing and no one is safe from a good-spirited roast. From never-ending Sarasota construction and the perpetual hunt for downtown parking to Mother Nature’s increasingly wild mood swings and our endless quest to stay young, Laughing Matters delivers fast-paced comedy inspired by the culture and politics of today. Laughing Matters, by head writer Rebecca Hopkins with contributing writers Kevin Allen, Sarah Durham, Stephan deGhelder, and Jim Prosser, will play beginning February 9, 2022 through June 19, 2022 in FST's Court Cabaret.

[SOON]  PERFORMANCE: The Players Centre Returns to Summer Programing with RABBIT HOLE , June 8 – June 19

The Players Centre for Performing Arts presents the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning play Rabbit Hole at Studio 1130 located in the Crossings at Siesta Key mall (3501 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34239) June 8-19, 2022. Becca and Howie Corbett have a picture-perfect family life in the suburbs of New York until a random, tragic accident takes the life of their four-year old son. Soon after, Becca’s younger, irresponsible sister, Izzy, announces that she is pregnant. As Becca and Howie grow apart, Becca’s mother, Nat, badgers Becca about her grieving process, and Jason, the young driver who killed their son, continually shows up to ask forgiveness, the group is on a bumpy road to healing with no road map in sight. Rabbit Hole delves into the complexity of a family navigating deep grief and learning what it means to live a fruitful life when things fall apart.

[SOON]  GALLERY: Women Contemporary Artists Members Spring Exhibition , June 3 – June 24

The Women Contemporary Artists Members Spring Exhibition 2022 will take place at Ringling College of Art & Design Lois and David Stuhlberg Gallery, 1188 MLK Way, from June 3 – 24, 2022. The exhibition is open to active WCA members who may submit two entries only, $30 for one entry and $35 for two entries. Art specs are 2D - 36” x 36” max, mid-sized and smaller works preferred. All media. Diptych and Triptychs allowed, but must fit into size requirements and sold as one painting. 3D work 72” x 20” max. Pedestals are available. If accepted into the show, be prepared to sit for one sitting in the gallery, if needed, from 9-12 or 12-3 on Monday through Friday for the length of the show. You can do this with a friend. Awards are $600 for 1st, $400 for 2nd, $300 for 3rd, and 5 Merit Awards $100 each. Receiving on Tuesday, May 24 between 10 AM and 2 PM and Jurying on Tuesday, May the 24th at 3 PM.

The 6th Annual Bob Rizi Memorial Golf Classic will take place on Friday, June 24 at The Meadows Country Club course only. Player check-in and breakfast will be from 7:30am to 9am, with a shotgun start at 9am. $800 per foursome, which includes continental breakfast, tee sign, and lunch. The tournament is limited to 36 foursomes on a first come first served basis and two golf carts will be provided to each foursome. [SOON]  GALLERY: As long as there is sun, as long as there is light: Selections from the Bring Gift and The Ringling Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art , November 21 – August 13, Museum hours.

The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art is pleased to announce the opening of As long as there is sun, as long as there is light. Selections from the Bring Gift and The Ringling Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art. The exhibition will run Nov. 21, 2021 – Aug. 13, 2023, in the museum’s Searing Wing. In 2020, The Ringling received a significant gift of art from Murray Bring and Kay Delaney Bring, in support of the modern and contemporary collection. Highlights from the gift include an important minimalist work by Anne Truitt and a monumental work on canvas by Gene Davis, both artists affiliated with the Washington Color School, an art movement during the 1950s to 1970s in Washington D.C., made up of abstract expressionist artists Additional works in the gift represent a generation of prominent artists who work, or have worked, in abstraction, including Clement Meadmore, Jules Olitski, Beverly Pepper, Rebecca Salter, Kenneth Snelson, and Yuriko Yamaguchi, among others. Also on view are sculptures and paintings by distinguished African American and Latin American artists from The Ringling collection, including William Edmondson, Eduardo Mac Entyre, Omar Rayo, Baruj Salinas, and Joyce de Guatemala.  

[SOON]  MUSIC: Sarasota Music Festival 2022: Hidden Gems , June 16, 4:30pm

The Hidden Gems Artist Showcase will take place on Thursday, June 16, 2022 at 4:30pm at Holley Hall. Three new faculty artists appear on this program featuring gems by great masters. Shostakovich’s lyrical and witty sides are evident in his Five Pieces, brought to life by new faculty members Grigory Kalinovsky and Toyin Spellman-Diaz. Nadia Boulanger was perhaps the most important musical pedagogue of the 20th century. Her exquisite Three Pieces are a rarely performed treat. The program concludes with the expressive First Piano Quartet by Boulanger’s teacher, Gabriel Fauré, featuring new faculty violinist Jennifer Frautschi.

[SOON]  MUSIC: Sarasota Music Festival 2022: Basically Baroque , June 17, 7:30pm

The Basically Baroque Festival Friday will take place on Friday, June 17, 2022 at 7:30pm at Sarasota Opera House. The rhythms and textures that define Baroque music continue to inspire today’s composers, as evidenced in this delightfully diverse program. Accomplished jazz musician and new Festival faculty hornist Jeff Scott’s wind quintet, Startin’ Sumthin’, is a modern tribute to the energy of ragtime. The rich textures and vibrant colors of a 17th-century Venetian palazzo shine in Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw’s Stucco & Brocatelle. Two Baroque masterpieces anchor the second half of this program. Travel back three centuries for the energizing virtuosity and soaring melodies of J.S. Bach’s glorious Double Violin Concerto, featuring Grammy-nominated violinist Jennifer Frautschi and Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra Concertmaster Margaret Batjer. The concert concludes with excerpts from Handel’s Water Music, written for performance as royal entertainment on the River Thames in 1717.

The Mozart and Brahms Festival Saturday will take place on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at 7:30pm at Sarasota Opera House. The rapturous Second Sextet for Strings—Brahms’s musical farewell to a lost love—opens a program of music by composers who defined their eras. Margaret Batjer and Desmond Hoebig team up with four Festival fellows in Brahms’s exhilarating tour de force. “Entrée de Polymnie” is a brief, yet profoundly beautiful selection from French Baroque composer Jean-Philippe Rameau’s final opera Les Boréades. World-renowned pianist and Mozart scholar Robert Levin returns as soloist in Mozart’s darkly brooding Piano Concerto No. 24, the composer’s most richly scored work for piano and orchestra. Festival Music Director Jeffrey Kahane conducts the Festival Orchestra in this dramatic program.

Lento from Piano Quartet No. 2 in E-flat Major; and Tchaikovsky IV. Allegro vivace from Souvenir de Florence.
