Friday Weekend Edition

Friday Weekend Edition

"Sondheim was such a big figure in musical theater and many of his songs are really poignant and explore different aspects of life, that it just felt right to do."

- Amanda Heisey, Marketing Director, The Players Centre.

[Arts & Entertainment]  Side by Side by Sondheim at The Players Centre
Dylan Campbell, dylan@srqme.com

This weekend, come to The Player’s Centre to check out Side by Side by Sondheim, the Tony Award-winning Stephen Sondheim musical revue. The show, which is the first in The Player’s Centre’s season of productions, made its season premiere on September 8th and will make its final appearance this weekend.

Side by Side by Sondheim kicks off The Player’s Centre 93rd season, entitled Six That Matter. “Our artistic director chose that title for our upcoming season because it features six shows that all explore different facets of life. They all have their own unique ways of inspiring us and showing the true beauty of life--they all matter in their different ways,” says Amanda Heisey, Marketing Director at The Player’s Centre.

Side by Side by Sondheim is a particularly apt production regarding the season’s theme of “Six That Matter” due to Stephen Sondheim’s recent passing in 2021. “Sondheim was such a big figure in musical theater and many of his songs are really poignant and explore different aspects of life, that it just felt right to do,” says Heisey.

New this year to The Player’s Centre are changes with the performance space. Off-season renovations have transformed the performance venue to a theater in the round format, making it more accessible for audience members. “Going into the round lets us add more seats so that the audience can see better, we’re one of the few theater’s in town that performs in the round,” says Heisey. “The format makes for a more interesting and artistic way to tell the story. While it takes more creativity from our directors and is more challenging for our actors, it feels like a more natural viewing experience from the perspective of audience members and we’re really excited to share that experience with them this year.”

Tickets:$30 Adult $13 Student, Studio 1130, 3501 S. Tamiami Trail, Suite 1130, Sarasota. Box Office: 941-365-2494.

[SRQ Book Club]  Non-Fiction Book Review of Boldly Go: Reflections on a Life of Awe and Wonder by William Shatner with Joshua Brandon
Bookseller Roxanne Baker, BookStoreOne Sarasota

Boldly Go is Shatner’s third non-fiction book and my first foray into ‘the guy I used to watch as Captain Kirk as a little girl on Saturday nights as my parents got ready for their weekly night out’. I assumed his book might be like some I’ve read, celebrity level trivial. Boy, was I wrong!!!

First, Shatner is a huge philanthropist from autism programs to children’s hospitals, to veterans recovery initiatives, he has a huge heart who gives freely to worthy projects. He’s so intuitive to kids’ emotions that I was in tears after reading about one encounter he had with a shy autistic fan at a signing event.

Second, he’s grateful for everything he has attained, but also admittedly candid about his fears that haunt him when he lived out of his pick up truck AFTER Star Trek, back in the dark ages when tv stars were not granted royalties and gigunda salaries.

Third, he’s an animal lover extraordinaire. He recounts powerful stories throughout history about the power of the horse-human connection. Ditto for the canines that have enriched his life.

Last, (but there’s so much more to read when you purchase this late in life memoir, as Shatner is 91) his experience of going into space with Jeff Bezos will blow your mind in a way I could not have predicted.

A great gift idea for virtually anyone, but especially those who appreciate a sage caring humanitarians and animal lovers.

Boldly Go: Reflections on a Life of Awe and Wonder by William Shatner with Joshua Brandon Publication Date: 10/4/22, ISBN #: 9781668007327. The book is available for pre-sale on BookStore1’s website www.sarasotabooks.com or in store on October 4th at 117 S. Pineapple, Sarasota.
