[Fundraising Event]  Pickleball Brawl Supports Baby Basics of Sarasota County
Barbie Heit, barbie.heit@srqme.com

On Saturday, February 1, pickleball players at Esplanade/Legacy Estates of Palmer Ranch gathered for the community’s fifth annual Street Brawl. The competition featured 11 pickleball teams, each representing a different street in the neighborhood, all vying for bragging rights and a coveted “winner” label to adorn their street sign.

The event also served as a fundraiser for Baby Basics of Sarasota County, Inc., an all-volunteer, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that provides diapers, wipes and support to working, low-income families who do not receive governmental assistance. Currently, there are 155 children in the program. Baby Basics also promotes literacy through a partnership with the Library Foundation for Sarasota County.

“Our Pickleball Street Brawl is the most requested event in our community,” shares tournament organizer, Kathy Schwartz. “Residents love to show their support for the work that goes into this event by donating to the wonderful charity, Baby Basics of Sarasota.”

Players and spectators of this year's Brawl rallied in support with generous donations that were later delivered to families in need by community members who volunteer with Baby Basics. Saturday’s tournament raised $2,200 and much needed supplies–including 31 children’s books and 50 packs of baby wipes–for Baby Basics. For all donations to the organization, The Flanzer Trust will match up to $500 At 100%. To learn more about Baby Basics, visit their website at: www.babybasicssarasota.org/

[Disaster Relief]  The Patterson Foundation Gives $500,000 To Strengthen California Wildfire and Tibet

The Patterson Foundation is providing $500,000 to the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) to strengthen recovery from recent global disasters. 2025 began with multiple devastating natural disasters worldwide. In early January, a Santa Ana wind event struck Los Angeles County with winds up to 80mph. The winds combined with drought conditions and warmer-than-typical temperatures caused a massive wildfire starting in Pacific Palisades and subsequent fires in Lidia, Sunset, Eaton and Hurst. Of these, the Eaton and Palisades fires are two of the top five most destructive fires in California’s history. At least 28 people have died thus far as firefighters continue to battle to contain the wildfires throughout Los Angeles. To learn more about the Center for Disaster Philanthropy and to contribute to either its CDP California Wildfires Recovery Fund or its CDP Global Recovery Fund, visit disasterphilanthropy.org.

[Recognition ]  Steve Townsend Honored at SRQ's Good Hero Luncheon
Barbie Heit, barbie.heit@srqme.com

Each year, SRQ Media invites the community to nominate individuals with hearts of giving who have made a significant impact with local nonprofit organizations — from volunteers and board members to individual staff members and donors. This year, attendees were thrilled to be together as we recognized these individuals at our annual Giving Coast and Good Hero Awards luncheon and panel discussion on Tuesday, January 28 at Michael’s on East in Sarasota. In the coming weeks, we are happy to feature each of the ten honorees in our Wednesday Philanthropic edition of SRQ Daily.

The first Good Hero we are recognizing is Steve Townsend, Board Member of Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties. Growing up with a single mother and juggling work, school and sports, Townsend learned the value of perseverance and hard work early in life. These experiences drive his passion for helping young people succeed. As a first-generation college graduate, he understands the transformative power of education and is committed to making it accessible to the next generation. His dedication to education, youth development and philanthropy has profoundly impacted Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties. In addition to his personal support, he has served as the Foundation Board of Directors Chair for the past year. Townsend has established two-year scholarships at local colleges for students who demonstrate dedication to education and personal development. These scholarships ensure that Club members have access to an associate's degree, vocational school or the ability to finish their general requirements at a four-year university debt-free. This is transformative for many members as they are seeking to be first-generation post-secondary graduates. Together with his wife, Marjolaine, Townsend has provided a pathway forward for 81 Club youth through the Townsend Scholarship. The impact of his work is best captured through the words of Club members: Thank you, Mr. Townsend, for believing in my future and giving me the opportunity to excel at college. This scholarship has opened doors for me that I never thought possible. Your generosity has changed my life, and I am so grateful for this chance to pursue my education. Because of you, I know I can achieve my goals. Being a Townsend Scholar means the world to me. This scholarship will help me pursue my degree and make my family proud.
