Creativity Meets Career: SCF's Art, Design and Humanities Programs

Guest Correspondence

At SCF, students are empowered to transform their passions into successful careers. The Art, Design, and Humanities department offers a wide range of programs that nurture creativity while preparing students for the workforce. Whether students are drawn to graphic design, photography, filmmaking, or humanities, SCF provides the ideal environment for them to turn their aspirations into action.

The Graphic Design Technology program at SCF combines creative vision with technical expertise. Students are trained in the core principles of design while also mastering the latest industry technologies. The curriculum covers a wide range of areas, including web design, advertising, motion graphics, packaging, and game design, providing students with the versatility needed for various roles in the creative sector. With options like the A.S. Degree in Graphic Design Technology and specialized certificates in Graphic and Web Design, students gain hands-on experience with industry-standard tools, building a strong portfolio that showcases their skills.

SCF’s Photographic Technology program gives students a deep understanding of both the artistic and technical aspects of photography. Emphasizing visual communication, the program prepares students for careers in commercial, editorial, and fine art photography, as well as photojournalism. Courses such as Studio Lighting and Darkroom Photography offer students the chance to explore both traditional and digital photography techniques. Beyond the classroom, students collaborate with local businesses and community projects, gaining practical experience that strengthens their resumes and gives them a competitive edge in the field.

For those interested in filmmaking, SCF’s Filmmaking program offers comprehensive training in digital cinema. Students learn everything from screenwriting and project development to video editing and sound design, gaining the skills necessary to succeed in a rapidly growing industry. SCF’s state-of-the-art equipment ensures that students are well-prepared to meet the demands of content creation in marketing, advertising, and entertainment. Graduates of the program have gone on to work for local news stations and create engaging content across various professional settings.

SCF also offers a wide selection of Humanities courses that explore the rich tapestry of human culture and history. Courses like Art Appreciation, Theatre Appreciation, and History of Motion Picture encourage critical thinking and provide students with a deep understanding of how art, culture, and ideas shape the world. The Humanities program fosters creativity, empathy, and innovation - skills that are applicable in any career and essential for understanding different perspectives.

One of the standout features of SCF’s programs is their affordability. For a fraction of the cost of many other institutions, students can access a world-class education. Classes start at just $300 per course, offering exceptional value without the burden of excessive student debt. Flexible scheduling options, including evening and online courses, allow students to balance their education with work or family responsibilities, making it easier to pursue their goals at their own pace.

SCF’s faculty members bring real-world experience into the classroom. Many professors are actively involved in their respective industries, providing students with up-to-date insights and guidance. These instructors also serve as mentors, offering personalized support as students work toward their professional goals. Instructor Melissa Link, for example, plays a pivotal role in the success of students in the Graphic Design Technology program. Known for her hands-on teaching style, Melissa offers valuable mentorship to students like Tenesha B., who graduated in Winter 2023 with an A.S. in Graphic Design Technology and two certificates. As a returning adult student, Tenesha balanced a full-time job with her coursework, thanks to SCF’s affordable tuition, flexible scheduling, and the hands-on guidance of instructors like Melissa. Today, Tenesha works as a graphic designer for SCF’s marketing department, where her work, including the “Healthy Smiles” campaign promoting free dental hygiene for youth, has made a significant impact.

Additionally, SCF’s partnerships with local businesses provide students with valuable internship opportunities, helping them gain practical experience while building important professional connections.

SCF is committed to meeting students where they are and helping them achieve their goals. Whether they are just beginning their educational journey or seeking to advance their careers, SCF provides the programs, resources, and support needed to turn passion into profession.

At SCF, we meet you where you are. We’re Everyone’s College.
