Saturday Perspectives Edition

"Time and again, I hear stories of partnerships launched, employees hired, deals closed and friendships forged because people chose to show up and connect."

[Chamber ]  Sarasota at Its Best: The Power of Connection in 2026
Heather Kasten, hkasten@sarasotachamber.com

As 2025 comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on the rhythm of this past year—the highs, the hurdles, and the remarkable resilience of our Sarasota business community. Every December gives us a natural pause, a moment to take inventory of what we’re grateful for. And I hope that each of us carves out that moment. Because gratitude isn’t just a pleasant exercise; it’s a grounding force. It reminds us of the people who encouraged us, the opportunities that pushed us, and the community that continues to fuel our purpose.

There’s a theme I keep coming back to: connection.

We live in an era where we are more “connected” technologically than at any other time in history. Yet many of us feel more relationally disconnected than ever. Endless emails, Zoom meetings, and social feeds can’t replace what truly moves the needle in business—human conversation, shared experiences, and genuine relationships.

That is exactly where the Sarasota Chamber steps in.

Meaningful connection is not a buzzword for us; it’s the backbone of our mission. And in 2025, we saw once again how powerful it is when businesses come together with intention.

Through our Connect 1st new member orientations, small-group welcome meetings, and networking receptions, we create the spaces where a new entrepreneur can meet their first customer, where a nonprofit leader finds a strategic partner, or where an established CEO discovers a rising talent. Our Young Professionals Group, Leadership Sarasota programs, and CareerEdge upskilling initiatives connect people not only to one another, but to opportunity, mentorship, and career pathways.

Our signature events—like the Frank G. Berlin Small Business Awards, Annual Meeting, Martinis & Mistletoe, our Economic Outlook and policy forums—bring together hundreds of leaders who understand that collaboration beats competition every single time. And throughout the year, our Chamber Ambassadors, staff, board members, and volunteers work behind the scenes to ensure that every new member and long-standing business feels seen, known, and supported. These aren’t just gatherings—they’re catalysts. Time and again, I hear stories of partnerships launched, employees hired, deals closed, and friendships forged because people chose to show up and connect.

And that brings me to 2026.

If you’re in business—any business—this will be a pivotal year to lean into connection. The economic landscape is shifting and the talent pipeline is evolving. Consumer expectations are rising. And isolation is not a winning strategy. Sarasota’s strength has always been rooted in its relationships: business leaders who champion one another, employers who invest in their teams, and a community that believes in shared prosperity. The Chamber stands ready to be that bridge, that convener, that connector for every business looking to grow, innovate, or simply find its place in this dynamic region.

As we move into the holiday season, my wish for you is simple: time with the people you love most, moments of joy that refill your tank, and the clarity to step confidently into a new year of possibility. And know this—the Sarasota Chamber is here. Always ready to listen, to learn, and to hear how we can best support and resource you in 2026 and beyond. Here’s to a connected, intentional, and powerful year ahead.

[EDC]  Sarasota County's Tech Economy Is No Accident
Erin Silk, esilk@edcsarasotacounty.com

Sarasota County’s tech ecosystem now has a digital hub. InnovateSarasotaCounty.com was created to serve as a modern treasure map for our growing tech and innovation community, helping people find opportunities and navigate the ecosystem. Whether you are a founder, investor, job seeker, or business leader, the site brings together the companies, resources, and connections shaping our innovation economy.

At its core, the website is about connection. It helps companies find talent, entrepreneurs find resources, and new companies understand why Sarasota County is the right place for their growing business. It sends a clear message that we are serious about building a strong, innovation-driven economy with intention.

That intention shows up across the ecosystem. Sarasota County offers a business-friendly tax environment, a strong higher-education system, a growing skilled workforce, and a quality of life that attracts people who want both career opportunity and personal fulfillment. What truly sets this region apart is collaboration. Our ecosystem is being built by community leaders working toward a shared goal of economic growth and community success.

We are also focused on science-driven innovation and the future Ocean Economy. World-class research at Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium is being translated into real-world solutions, new companies, and high-skill jobs. Through a partnership between Mote and the Economic Development Corporation, we are working to turn research breakthroughs into commercial success and attract companies that will grow here. This effort is helping to position Sarasota County as a world-renowned center for ocean and marine innovation.

This is a moment worth paying attention to. Whether you are launching a company, expanding a business, investing in emerging industries, or looking for your next career move, Sarasota County offers opportunity backed by momentum.

The data confirms what we are seeing.

Over the last five years, the North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton metro has grown from 350 tech companies to more than 830, a 137% increase. Tech employment has added 650 new jobs, while average annual wages have nearly doubled, rising from $65,000 to $125,000. Sarasota County leads Florida in in-migration of professionals ages 25 to 34, and in 2023 our metro led the nation in net gains of college-educated talent, with a 135% increase.

That is not coincidence.
That is a tech economy being built by design.
