[The Dish]  Beautiful Bites at Forks and Corks 2026
Kate Wight, kate.wight@srqme.com

Now in its 19th year, Forks & Corks is a multi-day food and wine festival produced by the Sarasota-Manatee Originals. Over the course of several days, participants can enjoy curated winemaker dinners at local restaurants, immersive tasting experiences in local retail shops, educational seminars and more. But the crown jewel of this annual event is the Grand Tasting, and on Sunday, January 25, food and wine enthusiasts gathered in the courtyard at The John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art to enjoy one of Florida’s most celebrated culinary events.

Over forty member restaurants from the Sarasota-Manatee Originals were on-site, presenting some of their signature dishes to hungry guests. It was impossible to sample everything, but a valiant effort was made. Riverhouse Waterside Restaurant presented a refreshing bite with their seared ahi. The tuna was so tender it was almost buttery, and it was accompanied by a tangy citrus slaw that offered a nice textural contrast. A wasabi drizzle added just the right amount of heat.

Pop’s Sunset Grill had two different dishes for diners to try. The rum-glazed pineapple shrimp bowl with coconut rice was bright and flavorful, but their true standout was the lobster encrusted filet. A tender, juicy bite of steak was topped with lobster, a sherry cream sauce and panko bread crumbs. The sherry cream sauce wasn’t overly rich, and the panko added a beautiful, buttery texture.

The highlight of the day was the chicken satay from Drunken Poet Cafe. A succulent morsel of grilled, marinated chicken was coated in a silky peanut sauce that somehow felt light despite its astonishingly layered flavor profile. This was perched on a lightly-pickled cucumber slice that was bright and refreshing in the midday heat. This was one of the few dishes that could be eaten in just one bite, something that was appreciated after sampling several (perhaps overly) generous portions of rich foods.

Another standout was the Tuna Nikkei representing both the Jack Dusty and Rufa restaurants at The Ritz-Carlton Sarasota. A perfectly crisp blue corn tortilla chip was topped with green radish, avocado mousse, coriander blooms and tamarind ponzu. A dollop of mango gel underneath was a sweet and refreshing surprise. It was easily the most beautifully-composed dish of the day, and exactly the kind of inventive and elevated dish you'd expect from the culinary team at the Ritz.

[The Dish]  No Escargot Required: Claudie's Does French for Everyone
Sarah Emily Miano, Sarah.Miano@srqme.com

In southern France, Claude and Aurielle Sagne spent 20 years catering from a converted Citroen U23 truck. Last year, they parked the mobile kitchen and opened Claudie’s, bringing their nostalgic French cooking to Sarasota. But translating recipes for American palates required more than an Atlantic crossing.

“Tastes here are very different,” says Aurielle, general manager, “so we had to adjust.” First obstacle: Eggs. “Over-medium, over-easy,” she says, “we don’t do all that in France. It’s sunny side up, scrambled or omelettes.” Timing changed, too. Back home, dinner parties last from 6 p.m. apéritifs to midnight dessert. “Here, you eat for two hours maximum. But it’s ok!”

The result is what Aurielle calls “a French-style restaurant with American influence.” She smiles: “And French service.” Up first: French onion soup, a burnished broth with jammy onions, soaked bread and oozy provolone and Swiss. Croque Monsieur comes on house-made pain de compagne, sliced thin. “We wanted to do something very different because everyone does croque monsieur.” Instead of soft sandwich bread, they wield “a French touch, with crispy bread.” Layers of silky bechamel, smoked country ham and cheese create a golden bite.

Owner-chef Claude’s beef bourguignon cooks a “long, long, long time” in a Malbec braise; the meat, fork-tender, is flanked by herbed potatoes and garlicky mushrooms. Everything relies on fresh produce, including the petite quiches. Pastries are made in-house, except croissants from Rendezvous Bakery, long-time friends and suppliers from France. Pillowy beignets arrive sugar-dusted. The apple tart is irresistible, rustic, buttery goodness.

For American influence, the Royal Burger draws a loyal following, stacked on a kaiser roll with a secret sauce. “We don’t want people to imagine that we only serve escargots,” Aurielle says (and they don’t, in fact). “I can serve a delicious hamburger because in France we eat hamburgers, too.”

Claude and Aurielle have worked side by side since culinary school and their firstborn was 12 days old. Their workday begins at 5:30 a.m., before breakfast regulars arrive for waffles, pancakes or those ubiquitous eggs. One Saturday a month, Claudie’s offers a five-course set menu with wine pairings (think savory tart with Cotes de Provence). The vintage truck sits off-site, but catering still drives them—private and corporate events, onsite or offsite.

As for crepes: February just may bring that tradition to the table for le Chandeleur, France’s midwinter holiday. “Maybe… Why not?” says Aurielle.

Claudie’s, Mon-Thurs, 8am-3pm, Fri-Sat 8am-8pm (3-5pm early-bird), Sun 8am-2:30pm, 17 S. Beneva Rd., Sarasota.

[Food and Nutrition]  Garden-To-Table Senior Fresh Produce Giveaways for Local Older Adults

Senior Friendship Centers, in partnership with VIPcare, is hosting two free Garden-to-Table Senior Produce Giveaways offering fresh fruits and vegetables to local seniors and older adults in need. These community giveaways provide nutritious produce to support health, wellness, and food access for older adults on limited incomes. Food insecurity remains a growing concern for older adults, particularly those living on fixed incomes. According to the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) report, the number of senior households under the ALICE threshold has steadily increased: From 37,000 in 2019, to 41,000 in 2021, and then to 48,600 one year later in 2022. Many seniors face difficult choices between groceries, medications, housing, and healthcare costs. Limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables can negatively impact chronic disease management, overall health, and quality of life. The Garden-to-Table Produce Giveaways help address this need by increasing access to nutritious food while connecting older adults to trusted community resources. No registration required. Seniors may stop by during event hours to receive a bag of fresh produce on a first-come, first-served basis. Bags will be provided. Produce is available while supplies.

Wednesday, January 28, Venice Campus, 2350 Scenic Drive, 11am-12pm. Sarasota Campus, 1888 Brother Geenen Way, 2-3pm.
