Wednesday Philanthropy Edition

"We want every child to have the chance to escape into a story, to feel seen and to imagine new possibilities."
Last year, we introduced our readers to Mom’s Book Nook–a new community initiative bringing the joy of reading to young readers. Founded by Felicia Donson in honor of her late mother, Elaine Rothberg, the organization carries forward Rothberg’s legacy of compassion and generosity. A retired SMH nurse, Rothberg believed deeply that small acts of kindness—like sharing a book—could brighten a child’s day and open doors to new possibilities. Together, mother and daughter discovered a shared passion for volunteering and promoting literacy. Their efforts began by curating and expanding a classroom library for a retired teacher and family friend. What started as a small project quickly evolved into a broader mission: placing books directly into the hands of children, especially during holidays and summer breaks when access can be limited. Their first donation—250 books—went to Jewish Family & Children’s Service of the Suncoast.
Just one year later, Mom’s Book Nook has grown into a community-wide initiative, donating more than 7,000 books and partnering with numerous local organizations serving children.
Many of these partners have shared their gratitude with Donson:
Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center’s VP of Philanthropy, MaryEllen Mancini, explained how the donation of beautiful new children’s books to SPARCC’s emergency shelter and holiday toy program has brought joy. “These stories are more than pages and pictures—they are pathways to comfort, imagination, and hope for our youngest survivors."
Community Engagement Manager for Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties, Valerie Knapp, said, “Through Mom’s Book Nook, our members have access to stories that inspire curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning. We are proud to partner with an organization that shares our commitment to empowering youth and strengthening our community.”
“We want every child to have the chance to escape into a story, to feel seen and to imagine new possibilities,” Donson said.
Mom’s Book Nook is currently seeking additional nonprofit and school partners, as well as individuals and businesses interested in supporting the initiative’s continued growth.

Each year, SRQ Media invites the community to nominate individuals with hearts of giving who have made a significant impact with local nonprofit organizations—from volunteers and board members to individual staff members and donors. This year, attendees were thrilled to be together as we recognized these individuals at our annual Giving Coast and Good Hero Awards luncheon and panel discussion on December 10 at Michael’s on East in Sarasota. In the coming weeks, we are happy to feature each of the ten honorees in our Wednesday Philanthropic edition of SRQ Daily.
Today we are recognizing Sepi Ackerman. Sepi is the Co-founder and President of Holiday House SRQ. Sepi’s nominator says this about her. “I got a chance to help Sepi with the Holiday House SRQ in December 2024. I was a videographer filming little kids walking into a room full of gifts they could pick for their families and even themselves. Seeing their smiles and how happy they were melted my heart. The work Sepi puts into Holiday House is absolutely incredible. She was just off surgery on the day I was there, no one expected her to be there, yet she showed up and personally was setting up gifts at Wilkinson school, still not feeling well, yet full of enthusiasm and desire to help kids who can't afford gifts.” Congratulations, Sepi!

Juana Romani (1867–1924) was one of the most fascinating and successful painters in late-nineteenth-century Paris. Born in Italy, Juana—whose given name was Giovanna Carlesimo—moved to Paris with her mother and stepfather at the age of ten. She took up painting, studying under the well-known painters Jean-Jacques Henner (1829–1905) and Ferdinand Roybet (1840–1920). Romani quickly earned both critical praise and significant fame for her deftly painted, richly colorful depictions of strong, sensual women adorned in lavish textiles.

This exhibition highlights contemporary Native design, craftwork, and art that employ the formal and aesthetic elements of abstraction as meaningful motifs and coded tools of Indigenous expression to communicate tribal cultures and histories, ancestral knowledge, and the lived experiences of the artists and their communities. Explored in a variety of media, including basket weaving, beadwork, collage, clay, textiles, photography, metalwork, and printmaking rooted in ancestral technologies, their work shares similar stylistic and social concerns, such as vibrant color, hard-edged geometries, curvilinear patterns, and bold mark-making, all infused with personal stories and those of their kin.
