"This is probably the best course in North America."

[Rowing]  Nathan Benderson Park Hosts Top Collegiate Rowing Teams in Sarasota 2K
Dylan Campbell, dylan@srqme.com

This past week, Nathan Benderson Park proved once again why it is one of the top rowing venues in the sport. From March 26 to 28, Nathan Benderson hosted the 2026 Sarasota 2K – Sun, Rowing, and Rivalry, a regatta featuring some of the top men’s and women’s collegiate rowing programs.

“This is probably the best course in North America,” says Paul Cooke, Men’s Crew Head Coaching Chair at Brown University. “To be able to come down here to this venue, to race against this level of competition in such fair conditions is special. Even the practices are better—the guys are excited to race.”

The Sarasota 2K, previously known as the IRA Sarasota Invitational, was the launching pad for Nathan Benderson Park’s reputation as a world class rowing venue. Originally catering to a smaller number of Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association (FIRA) schools, the Sarasota 2K has blossomed into a regatta that tests the mettle of the nation’s top teams. This year’s regatta featured a slew of Ivy League powerhouses such Brown, Harvard and Yale as well as former national champions and current contenders like the University of Washington, Stanford, Northeastern University and more. Florida powerhouses University of Central Florida (UCF), University of Miami and Stetson University also competed in the Sarasota 2K.

“This is the first original event that ever happened at the park,” says Bruce C. Patneaude, COO of Nathan Benderson Park. “It started out as a FIRA event and has only grown since then. What’s different about this regatta is that most of our events are youth-sports focused and this is actually collegiate. This is the next-level of competition that youth rowers get to see firsthand.”

With the competitive, “championship” stretch of the collegiate rowing season running from March to late May, the Sarasota 2K offered the chance for coaches to get an honest assessment of where their programs stand at this point in the year. Both the men’s and women’s competition featured repeat winners from 2025, with Washington winning the Benderson Cup on the men’s side and UCF taking home the trophy for the women.

Jewish Family & Children’s Services of the Suncoast placed the bags from CDS directly into the hands of children and families in need. [SOON]  PERFORMANCE: Lady Disdain , June 6 – June 27

There's much ado about something in this whip-smart, laugh-out-loud new romantic comedy from Lauren Gunderson. Lady Disdain is a fast-paced, razor-sharp riff on the deliciously dramatic world of Fantasy Romance novels (yes, those ones-you know them, you love them). Beatrice and Benedict, rival audiobook narrators with voices made for swooning and tempers made for sparring, are locked in a battle of wits, words, and wildly inconvenient attraction. Asolo Rep proudly presents this world premiere from one of America's most celebrated and funny playwrights.

Asolo Repertory Theatre, 5555 N Tamiami Trail, Sarasota

[SOON]  MUSIC: Music for 18 Musicians , April 24, 7:30pm

2026 brings a rare alignment of milestones: the 50th anniversary of Steve Reich’s “Music for 18 Musicians,” the composer’s 90th birthday, and enSRQ’s own 10th season. Reich’s groundbreaking 1976 work remains one of the most iconic statements in contemporary music—a luminous tapestry of interlocking rhythms, pulsing harmonies, and slowly shifting patterns that seem to suspend time. Presenting this masterpiece in celebration of its golden anniversary is both an homage to a living legend and a reaffirmation of enSRQ’s dedication to adventurous, transformative performance.

What he discovers is a story far richer than he ever expected. Based on the beloved novel and Tim Burton film, Big Fish is a whimsical, emotionally rich production filled with humor, heart, and unforgettable stagecraft.

This exhibition highlights contemporary Native design, craftwork, and art that employ the formal and aesthetic elements of abstraction as meaningful motifs and coded tools of Indigenous expression to communicate tribal cultures and histories, ancestral knowledge, and the lived experiences of the artists and their communities. Explored in a variety of media, including basket weaving, beadwork, collage, clay, textiles, photography, metalwork, and printmaking rooted in ancestral technologies, their work shares similar stylistic and social concerns, such as vibrant color, hard-edged geometries, curvilinear patterns, and bold mark-making, all infused with personal stories and those of their kin.
