The acai bowls at Clementines don’t come in your typical round bowl. Sky Kirkwood spent years working in her family’s ice cream and donut shops on Anna Maria Island, so when she created her own menu, she opted for banana-split boats. At 22, she opened her cafe in Bradenton. Two weeks later, Hurricane Helene leveled both family businesses.
Her sister Ocean, suddenly without work, came on full-time. Their mother Julie joined to lead marketing and design. “Sad as it is, it’s all brought us even closer,” Kirkwood says. “It makes me so happy knowing how much Clementines can support my family.”
Clementines exudes the cheerful, communal energy of a beach-town smoothie shack in a downtown setting. Every to-go cup comes scrawled with a Bible verse or short affirmation. “People say, you have no idea how much this message helped me today,” Kirkwood says.
The food works because it doesn’t feel dutifully healthy. Eight acai flavors range from the dragonfruit-based Pretty N’ Pink to the mango-heavy Golden Girl, topped with strawberries, kiwi, coconut and orange blossom granola. Take your pick from drizzles of honey, Nutella, marshmallow. The Cabana Boy smoothie blends blue spirulina with banana, pineapple and coconut milk into something tangy and tropical. Refreshers like the Sunkissed & Smitten slushie, a June special, wed mints and watermelon into a crisp antidote to Florida summers.
On the savory side, befitting a picnic, You’re My Buckaroo folds ham, salami, tomato, mozzarella and pesto into a spinach wrap. Bread for sandwiches and toasts arrives daily from Breadsmith’s. Gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan: Kirkwood’s got your back.
It all came to light during a nannying stint. “I’m craving a good smoothie, but I don’t want to go to one of the franchises, and there’s nowhere else you could find one,” she says. “So I was like, you know what? I’m going to create it myself.” Her place wouldn’t let dietary restrictions divide a table. “It’s not, only one of us can eat here. The whole family can find something.”
