Here’s the deal. Baseball may very well be America’s pastime, but for those who play it, it’s something more of a pipedream. Around 98% of baseball players will never reach the Major Leagues, but even more notably, only about 12% of high school players will go on to play in college. That’s where organizations like Prospect Wire come in.
Founded in 2005, Prospect Wire is an organization geared towards attracting collegiate attention for overseen high school baseball players. Prospect Wire hosts tournaments and showcases across the country that attract scouts from all collegiate levels. From July 18-22, the organization will host the 7th Annual National Championship in Sarasota County. Featuring five age divisions from 13U through 17/18U, the tournament will be played at some of the premier venues in the state, including the Spring Training Complexes of the Atlanta Braves, Baltimore Orioles and the Tampa Bay Rays.
“It has turned into the premier end of summer event,” says Brian Werner, president of Prospect Wire. “The west coast of Florida is a pretty easy draw for out of state teams—most companies don’t get to say that the majority of games the kids will be playing will be on Major League complexes.”
Werner predicts around 30 college scouts from four year and junior colleges to be in attendance. Playing in a tournament such as the National Championship allows players to test their mettle against elite competition—make the all-tournament team or show out against a certain ace pitcher and suddenly, a high school player could be on a scout’s radar. “It’s a benefit, because a scout might be there to watch specific players, but with four games going on at once at a complex, then there are seven other teams that have an opportunity to catch someone’s eye,” says Werner. “As schools head into the fall, it’s a great event for college coaches to see kids in that next graduating class that they’re looking to fill as the recruiting cycle turns over.”
