Leadership matters. Perhaps now more than ever, strong communities need people who are willing to step forward, listen thoughtfully, inspire others and turn ideas into meaningful action. Leadership is not simply about holding a title or being at the head of an organization. It is about service, responsibility and the willingness to make a difference, whether in the workplace, through philanthropy, in government, or simply by showing up for the community.
Here in Sarasota, we are fortunate to be surrounded by individuals who embody those qualities every day. They remind us that the future of our community is shaped by people who invest their time, talent and passion in making it stronger.
That is why I am especially proud to invite our community to join us for the Celebrate Outstanding Leadership Awards, an annual luncheon presented by Leadership Sarasota and the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce. This year's event recognizes five exceptional leaders whose contributions demonstrate the many ways leadership creates lasting impact.
Congratulations to our 2026 honorees: Lucy Nicandri, recipient of the Lifetime of Leadership Award; Fiona Farrell, recipient of the Impact in Action Award; Kari Queen, recipient of the Leadership Sarasota Dedication Award; Heather Todd, recipient of the Civic Champion Award; and David Verinder, recipient of the Community Catalyst Award.
Please join us on Wednesday, August 5, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Michael's On East for an afternoon of recognition, connection and inspiration. The luncheon brings together Leadership Sarasota alumni, Chamber members, business leaders and community members to celebrate those who continue to strengthen our region. Tickets are $95 for active Leadership Sarasota alumni and $110 for Chamber members, non-members and guests.

Democracy works best when voters are informed, engaged and connected to the people who want to represent them. That’s why the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance was proud to partner with the Bradenton Area EDC, Manatee Chamber of Commerce, Realtor Association of Sarasota and Manatee, Sarasota Chamber of Commerce and Sarasota County EDC to host one of the region’s largest Meet the Candidates events.
With more than 50 candidates participating, the event gave members of the business community a unique opportunity to meet candidates face-to-face, ask questions, share concerns and learn more about the individuals seeking to serve at every level of local government. Rather than hearing campaign messages through advertisements or social media, attendees had the chance to have meaningful conversations about the issues that matter most to our region’s future.
At the Alliance, we do not endorse political candidates. Our mission is to foster a strong business environment — one that allows opportunity for productive, respectful dialogue between the business community and those who seek public office.
As we approach the upcoming election, we encourage every eligible voter to make a plan to cast their ballot. Local elections have a direct impact on our daily lives, from transportation and infrastructure to education, public safety, economic development and quality of life. The decisions made by local elected officials shape the communities where we live, work and do business.
Remember: Florida’s Primary Election is Tuesday, Aug. 18. Whether you vote early, by mail or on Election Day, your voice matters. Every election is important, but local elections often have the greatest impact on the future of our communities.

Summer is a season of change. Children are out of school. Families are navigating increased living costs and childcare expenses. And for many households, budgets are stretched thinner than ever. At All Faiths Food Bank, our work to make sure no one in our community goes hungry becomes even more urgent.
Through September, All Faiths needs 800 volunteers to provide approximately 12,000 hours of support at 60 planned outdoor mobile pantries. These distributions are a crucial part of our summer response, helping to ensure children, families, seniors and veterans have access to nutritious food.
This work is especially important as local households continue to feel the pressure of increasing grocery, fuel and insurance costs. For families already struggling to make ends meet, summer can bring additional challenges.
Our volunteers make it possible to respond.
In 2025, 3,200 “Hunger Heroes” contributed more than 59,000 hours to help our neighbors facing hunger. These volunteers sorted and packed food, worked at mobile distributions, supported nutrition education and cooking classes, helped at events, and contributed in countless other ways.
Much of the volunteer work needed over the next couple of months involves helping at outdoor mobile pantries in the sweltering Florida heat. We know it’s not easy work. But when you volunteer, you help make sure more of our neighbors can access the food they need during one of the most challenging times of year.
You may help a child who no longer has access to school meals. You may help a senior stretch a fixed income or a working family make ends meet. And you help All Faiths reach more people when the need is greatest.

Award-winning Hermitage Fellows offer a unique glimpse into their creative process, sharing original works in process with our Gulf Coast audiences. The summer 2026 exhibition at Selby Gardens will celebrate the creative collaboration between two legendary figures and longtime friends, photographer Lynn Goldsmith and singer-songwriter Patti Smith, who is Selby Gardens’ artist in residence. The exhibition will feature Goldsmith’s photographs of Smith, past and present, in the Museum of Botany & the Arts. The images will offer an intimate portrait of an iconic artist over the course of her remarkable career.

Mayer explores the impact of technology on the human body through this interactive sculpture series. Slumpies invites viewers to sit and slump on these sculptures, much like furniture, and find a place of comfort while using their technological devices.

This summer's children's musical at Asolo Repertory Theatre will take you on a trip down the Yellow Brick Road. Adventure awaits at this family-friendly production at the Cook Theatre. The Wizard of Oz: Youth Edition is directed and choreographed by Cat Brindisi and is under the music direction of Carl Haan. Join Dorothy, Toto and friends from Oz as they embark on a musical journey to find their way home.

At the Court Cabaret, Nancy Allen presents a powerful tribute to era-defining artists in the 1970s, featuring hits from Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Stevie Nicks, Linda Ronstadt and more. A singer trio of Victoria Boland, Samantha Duval and Madalyn McHugh deliver powerhouse vocals that capture the soul and strength of the female artists who wrote their own rules. Start studying for Gecko's Grill and Pub's 24th Annual Summer Trivia Tournament. This six-week competition features weekly trivia nights on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at participating Gecko's locations throughout Sarasota and Manatee counties. Teams can enjoy food and drink specials while competing for a share of $1,000 in Gecko's Bucks. The three teams with the highest cumulative scores are invited to the championship tournament, which is scheduled for Gecko's on Clark Road on August 17.

Ever wonder what goes into creating a circus? The Ringling's Canvas City exhibit offers a behind-the-scenes look at the people who make the spectacular entertainment venues come to life, from tentmakers and photographers to costume designers. See over 1,500 pieces, including circus costumes, leotards, band uniforms, animal blankets and more. Costumes on view will be rotated throughout the year as museum registrars review the collection and add notes and new photography to their records.

This comical play created by writer, producer and filmmaker Tate Elizabeth celebrates the unconditional bond between a dog and its human–even if that human is the least dog-friendly person on the planet. The exhibition at Selby Gardens’ Historic Spanish Point campus celebrates childhood and the imagination of youth through the words and images of A Child’s Garden of Verses, the beloved book of poetry for children by the celebrated Scottish writer, Robert Louis Stevenson. The exhibition features photographs of pages from a vintage edition of the book, combining Stevenson’s poetry with illustrations by the notable American artist, Alexander Dobkin. Accompanying the photographs are simple interactives that draw their inspiration from Stevenson’s poems and enhance the visitor experience.
