There are creative-minded people and then there are creators. The Italian artist Keziat is one of the latter. Kezia Terracciano, who graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Foggia, Italy in 1998, has created a completely distinctive visual language which permeates throughout her practice. First working in oil painting, Keziat made the shift to developing works of art using ballpoint pen in 2009 and, after exhibiting all over the world, has never looked back. This September, Keziat brought her unique artistry to Sarasota, for the American premiere of her exhibition Stelea: Visions Beyond Time at 502 Gallery. The show, which features sketches, installations and video-performance work, is emblematic of who Keziat is an artist. Below is an excerpt from the full interview with Keziat in the November issue of SRQ Magazine.
SRQ: Can you tell me about Stelea and the different ideas that drove the creation of this show?
Keziat: Everything is exposed. The works are all made with just pen on canvas or paper, such as newspaper. I like to draw with a pen because it’s intuitive and instinctive. I use just normal pens—this one in my hand is a Bic—in blue, red and every color. I start with a small detail and continue on without making a sketch first, like a stream of consciousness. I never have a plan before starting my work. Stelea was created to move some emotions inside of me. It’s connected to my perception of the outside world. Everything that you see here are my emotions and memories—my mind is very imaginative. Many things have meaning for me—doors, small houses, the people without faces or heads. They symbolize the craziness of imagination that makes your head go up in the clouds. I’ll depict characters in flight, because my imagination is something that isn’t rooted to the ground.

The Sarasota Ballet opens its 2026–2027 Season with a program that looks both forward and back as the Company celebrates 20 years under the direction of Iain Webb. Gemma Bond’s Manner makes its Company premiere, exploring the tension between learned behavior and instinct through choreography that gradually allows composure to give way. A collection of Divertissements by Sir Frederick Ashton showcases the wit, musicality, and remarkable range of the choreographer whose work has become central to The Sarasota Ballet’s identity. Closing the program is Dominic Walsh’s Wolfgang for Webb, the first ballet commissioned by Webb for the Company. Set to the music of Mozart, the work’s blend of classical technique, contemporary movement, elegance, and humor provides a fitting return to a ballet that marked the beginning of a new artistic chapter for The Sarasota Ballet.

On October 10, Key Chorale opens its 42nd season with one of the most powerful choral works of our time. Key Chorale’s 100 voices will join world-class mezzo-soprano Amanda Crider and orchestra for Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace at 4 PM at Holley Hall. More than a concert, A Mass for Peace is a sweeping journey through conflict, grief, compassion, and ultimately hope. From the ominous pulse of a drumbeat to moments of breathtaking beauty and a final plea for peace, Jenkins’ masterpiece harnesses the extraordinary expressive power of the human voice.

Art Center Sarasota launches the first exhibition cycle of its 2026–27 season with four new shows examining cultural memory, resilience, playfulness, and the surreal. The exhibition cycle features Karina Yanes' Olive Branches Carried Us Home, St. Pete Ceramics' The Revival, Jorge Blanco's Joy In Motion, and the juried exhibition Strange Weather. Together, the exhibitions consider how art can preserve identity, sustain community, and create space for joy and imagination amid change. A public opening reception will be held Thursday, October 8, 5-7pm. The exhibitions remain on view through Saturday, November 14. Admission is free.
On November 7 and 8, 2026, Sarasota Youth Opera will present Rachel J. Peters’ one-act opera Rootabaga Country, a whimsical journey of imagination, family, and self-discovery based on Carl Sandburg’s 1922 book, Rootabaga Stories. Since its inception in 1984, the Youth Opera Program at Sarasota Opera has become a national model for opera education, offering instruction from noted professionals in the opera industry and participation in main stage opera productions, concerts, and summer programs. Each year, the Sarasota Youth Opera presents a fully staged production with Sarasota Opera’s world class orchestra, sets, and costumes, with Youth Opera members aged 8-18 performing alongside professional artists.

Senior Friendship Centers continues its “Joyful Journeys” author series with three free programs exploring history, science, international connections and the natural world. The series celebrates storytelling and regional authors, inviting them to share the ideas, experiences and inspiration behind their work. Programs include author presentations, lively discussions and Q&A sessions, with opportunities to connect with fellow book lovers. The upcoming programs begin October 1 with author Bülent Yavuz and his novel, “Sick Man,” followed November 12 by Raymond A. Young discussing “Sarasota Sister Cities: Sixty Years of Citizen Diplomacy,” co-written with Craig H. Hullinger, and December 3 by Kathryn Young and Raymond A. Young presenting “Sarasota Audubon Society: An Historical Perspective.”
Two popular tribute shows return to the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall this October for a weekend of back-to-back performances celebrating the unforgettable music of Fleetwood Mac and ABBA. Rumours of Fleetwood Mac brings its acclaimed tribute to one of rock and roll’s most beloved bands on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. Then, on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m., The Concert: A Tribute to ABBA invites “Dancing Queens” and kings to Sarasota for an evening filled with the iconic songs of ABBA. Channeling the spirit and sound of Fleetwood Mac at their very best, Rumours of Fleetwood Mac offers fans the opportunity to rediscover the songs and performances that have cemented Fleetwood Mac’s place in music history.

Sarasota Paradise will turn Premier Sports Campus pink on Saturday, October 10, when the club hosts Richmond Kickers for Pink in Paradise, a special Breast Cancer Awareness Night dedicated to honoring survivors, supporting those currently fighting breast cancer, and raising awareness throughout the local community. The initiative will see Sarasota Paradise partner with the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation, a statewide nonprofit at the forefront of Florida’s fight against breast cancer for more than 30 years through research, education, and advocacy. Funds raised through Pink in Paradise will directly benefit Sarasota and Manatee Counties. Sarasota Paradise will donate a portion of every ticket sold in the East Stand for the October 10 match to the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation, providing another way for supporters attending the game to contribute to the campaign.

This long-term installation in Gallery 10 of the Museum of Art showcases five outstanding examples of 17th-century Dutch painting on loan from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Featuring a dramatic seascape, an expansive landscape, and captivating portraits set in detailed interiors, this exhibition offers a window into the vibrant artistic production of the Netherlands as the small nation rose to global prominence in the 17th century.
