The Sarasota County Veterans Commission announced Navy veteran Matthew Erny, Jr. as the 2014 recipient of the John H. McLain Veteran of the Year Award and retired Army Col. Linda Gould as this year’s recipient of the Woman Veteran of the Year Award. Gould retired after a 29-year Army career that included service as a military intelligence officer and Latin American foreign area officer. Gould was the first woman to command a US military unit in Latin America. She also taught at the well-known Inter-American Defense College at Ft. McNair, Washington, D.C.
