To Market, to Market

The downtown Sarasota Farmers’ Market baby goods hangout, The Blue Peony, announces its new line of organic cotton kiddie gear—Under the Sea. The cozy collection is made with Cloud9 Fabrics (which are touted in July’s Martha Stewart Living) and includes handmade bibs, towels, quilts and toys. The sea theme is apparent throughout—blues, greens and corals are accented with sea urchins, sand dollars and pearls. Take your pick on The Blue Peony’s website or at the farmers’ market on Saturdays from 7am—noon.

Playing Presidential Pretend

Give your guests the presidential treatment at your next swanky soiree. At Simply Gourmet, Chef Larry Barrett and his catering crew rekindle the pomp and circumstance of one of your favorite commander-in-chief's lavish dinners. For years, Barrett has collected the menus from notable dining experiences—like the last meal on the Titanic—to create a historical, theatrical and gastronomical experience. Instead of looking up to baseball players, the chef looks up to the talented presidential chefs, like the Kennedy’s chef Rene Verdon. Like Verdon, Barrett treats his guests as if they are first ladies and ambassadors, creating an air of tradition—from the food right down to the silverware. One of the most popular dinners to reproduce is the one President John F. Kennedy served to Princess Grace at the White House. Served on May 21, 1961, the meal included Shrimp Amandine, Salad Mimosa with citrus-marinated crab, Spring Lamb Primeurs and Strawberries Romanoff. Today’s diners are served in the same way Jackie Kennedy’s guests would be, seated at round tables, with couples separated to promote conversation. And, for the supply-side economics buffs, feast on the 40th president’s meal of Dilled Salmon, Chicken Veronique, a wild green salad, and a Grand Marnier Soufflé. No votes are necessary to eat like the leader of the free world.
