New Gas to Energy Plant Open in Nokomis

Business

Sarasota County’s new Landfill Gas to Energy Facility is now operating on the grounds of the Central County Solid Waste Disposal Complex in Nokomis. The facility is a joint project between Sarasota County and a private company, Landfill Energy Systems Florida. Instead of just burning methane, a greenhouse gas produced by the county's Phase 1 Landfill, that gas is now converted into electricity that enters the power grid. A 15-year agreement between the two parties gives the county the opportunity to have a state-of-the-art facility with no capital outlay and a steady revenue stream based on a percentage of the power purchase revenues collected by the company.
