A team of Sarasota County Fire Department employees received the Unit Citation Award, a Congressional Fire and Rescue Service Award, at a ceremony on Monday. The award was for actions in response to a 2014 gasoline tanker crash on Interstate-75. Rep. Vern Buchanan honored several local award winners, including Sarasota County Fire Department Lt. Jason Wilkins, Lt. Jamie Mann, firefighter/EMT Nicholas Jones, firefighter/paramedic Sean Sponable and firefighter/EMT Clayton Huber. The team was nominated by Fire Chief Michael Regnier after placing themselves in jeopardy by wading through gasoline and extricating the driver of a truck after it rolled over and crashed into a ditch along I-75 the morning of Aug. 27, 2014.
