USFSM to Introduce Area's 1st NCAA Women's Rowing Team

SRQ Story Project

USF Sarasota-Manatee will begin the year with high hopes as it introduces new academic and athletic programs to Southwest Florida. Situated along US 41 at the border of Manatee and Sarasota counties, the campus will enter the year with a mandate to raise $1 million in order to launch an NCAA women’s rowing team in 2018. Seeds for the team were planted years ago and last year the idea was included in the campus’ long-range vision, Focus on Quality 2020.

But now the idea is firmly taking root. Earlier in 2016 the proposal won the NCAA’s backing and when the team officially launches as a member of the American Athletic Conference, it will mark the first time an NCAA Division I team has been based in the Sarasota-Manatee area.
