Single Stream Recyclers to Bring 80 Jobs to Sarasota

Business

A growing recycling company is expanding to Sarasota County, hiring 40 new employees later this year and ramping up to nearly 80 when it reaches capacity in 2018. At the same time, it will be recycling more materials that are now going into local landfills. Single Stream Recyclers is a private company that sorts, bales and ships paper, cardboard, aluminum, plastics, metal, glass and other recyclables from residential curbside and commercial recycling collection. It currently has a facility in Cocoa, Florida. Single stream recycling is a concept where residents put all of their recyclables in a single, large rolling cart. This is in contrast to the current collection for most residents who have small bins and must separate the paper goods from their containers. This method helps to increase participation within the population, therefore increasing recycling. The new facility will be located in Sarasota County at 3901 Orange Ave., in the greater Newtown area. It will be just under 100,000 square feet, which is substantially larger than the companies 63,750-square-foot facility in Brevard County. The larger size will increase efficiencies and double the capacity of Brevard plant by using state of the art recycling technologies, and will become one of the most advanced such facilities in the United States.
