An Homage to Snooty

Arts & Culture

In this month's edition of SRQ Magazine, we paid special homage to a beloved local manatee. Snooty was featured in a Parting Shot illustration along with Pee-wee Herman in a creative montage inspired by the iconic bicycle scene from Steven Spielberg's 1982 movie E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Little did we know that the artwork created by Ringling College of Art and Design student and illustrator Joel Stralnic would become a bittersweet moment in light of recent news. In the spirit of celebrating all that makes our hometown wonderful, we commemorate the icons who left their special mark on the hearts of our communities, and that includes Snooty the Manatee. More than a scientific wonder, Snooty was a symbol of his city, a character all his own and a beloved member of the South Florida Museum family and beyond. A Snooty Memorial Open House will take place Sunday, Sept. 10, 2017 at the South Florida Museum from noon to 5pm, where visitors can pay their respects, create memorial projects and view a special visual tribute to Snooty in the Bishop Planetarium. Illustration by Joel Stralnic (pictured left).
