Why is it important for nonprofits to embrace a culture of change?

Change is a natural component of any healthy organization. It is necessary to stay relevant, innovative, recruit the 'right' people, and for nonprofits especially, make the impact you want to have on the world. If this perspective is built into the organization's culture, it can thrive. If not, it will quickly find itself struggling and may not realize that the problem is rooted in a culture unreceptive to change.

Have you found it difficult for nonprofits to embrace change, or as you say, “make it stick?” Why is that?

In my experience, the most challenging aspect is related to big picture, strategic change. The minute the proposed change feels like it could affect the organization’s mission, people react out of loyalty and strict allegiance because it feels scary and new. Nonprofits have a wide range of stakeholders invested in their success therefore, ensuring each group has buy-in during the process can be challenging. However, this is key in making sure the time, money and energy invested in visionary change results in
