Neuro Challenge Foundation for Parkinson’s received a grant from Designing Women Boutique in Sarasota, FL to help provide no-cost essential services annually to thousands of people with Parkinson’s and their caregivers in Sarasota County.  A grant from Designing Women Boutique will allow Neuro Challenge to meet the needs of the Parkinson’s community by offering education, therapeutic and support programs via online platforms and tele-care advising by the Neuro Challenge Care Advisor team.

There are over 3,000 people in Sarasota County diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and for every diagnosis there is a caregiver or family who also needs education and support.  It’s important that people with Parkinson’s and their caregivers know they are not alone in their journey and that journey starts with finding the right care, support and information to help them become self-sufficient in managing every aspect of the disease: physically, psychologically and emotionally. 

Parkinson’s disease exacerbates isolation, and it is crucial that the Parkinson’s community stay connected and have access to the latest information and ongoing emotional support during this COVID-19 pandemic.  While stressful for most, social distancing may be detrimental for people with PD and their caregivers.  Parkinson’s increases the feeling of isolation, but Neuro Challenge programs promote self-sufficiency and socialization for both the person with PD and their caregiver – which is especially important during this time of sheltering in place. 

During the COVID-19 crisis, Neuro Challenge quickly responded to create over 40 virtual programs, offer a wide variety of classes designed specifically for persons with PD and provide programs easily accessible by everyone from the comfort and safety of home. Movement classes are an example of critical online services offered by Neuro Challenge for PD families.   Regular exercise is crucial for those living with Parkinson’s and is a cornerstone for symptom management, motor function and well-being.  Virtual access to important programs is more critical than ever before, particularly for those with physical limitations or those living in rural areas of Manatee County.
