Arts & Culture

Something special has been stirring up in Sarasota since last Friday, the 14th of October. It has been a sign of new beginnings, a taste of what’s to come, and an opening ceremony like no other. Last Friday kicked off “10 Days at the Bay”, a 10-day schedule of events to open The Bay to the public. The Bay, of course, being the city’s newest signature public park, part of an community, city, and park conservatory initiative to rebuild 53 acres of city-owned shoreline into an inclusive, multi-functional space for all to enjoy. “The Bay represents a world class park on Sarasota Bay, offering a gathering place that will bring our community together and provide one park for all,” says AG Lafley, founding CEO of The Bay Park Conservancy.

Over the last week, each day at The Bay has consisted of various free festivities and activities for visitors to from guided kayak and nature walking tours to “Taste at the Bay”, an outdoor food festival featuring some of the area’s best local restaurants, a concert from the Long Run – known as the best Eagles tribute band in the country – fitness bootcamps, and more.

This Saturday, or “Day 9”, come to The Bay for “Multicultural Day”, which looks to celebrate Sarasota’s diveristy and a wide-range of ethnicities and cultural backgrounds through local food vendors, performances, and art work. Saturday’s Multicultural Day will feature performances from Kuumba Dancers, Tierra Nueva, West Coast Black Theatre Troupe, CreArte Latino, Jaleo World Music, and more. From 12:30pm-6:30pm, families can work together to create a cultural family art project, courtesy of the Van Wezel Foundation.

The fun continues into the night with Astronomy at The Bay. Starting at 7:30pm, visitors can learn about the stars and galaxy above through a special telescopic experience provided by the Suncoast Stargazers and Sidewalk Science Center.
