Leveling the Playing Field

Things To Do

“If I’m being honest, putting kind of levels the playing field. I’m never gonna be able to add 75 yards to my drive. But if I practice, do my homework, and am consistent, I have a chance to compete in putt putt with any golfer,” says Guillaume Beland, tournament director at Popstroke Entertainment Group, the technology infused golf entertainment venue which officially opened the doors to its Sarasota location this past past April. The golf-entertainment venture – co-owned by Tiger Woods’ TGR Ventures – has four locations in Florida, including Sarasota’s venue, which features two 18-hole putting courses designed by Wood’s TGR Design team in addition to an outdoor dining area and rooftop bar.

This week, Popstroke’s Sarasota location is home to three putting tournaments, both with much higher stakes than your typical mini-golf outing. First is the Team Championship, which took place over four rounds on Wednesday and Thursday. “We have 200 teams of two, so 400 hundred total golfers, all coming from 18 different countries and 49 different states. There’s a mix of professional putt putt players, mini tour golf players, one tour professional, people that like to golf, and PGA of America professionals. There’s a $100,000 purse, with $20,000 awarded to the winner,” says Beland.

Next, the Stroke Play Championship on Thursday and Friday, an individual contest also lasting four rounds, with a field of 100 players and a purse of $25,000 with $5,000 allotted to the winner. And finally, the biggest of all, the Taylormade $25k showdown at the conclusion of the team and stroke play tournaments this Friday. “The winning team of the Team Championship will not only win $20,000, but will also win a chance to compete for an additional $25,000 across 18 holes of putting against PGA and LPGA tour golfers RIckie Fowler and Paula Creamer,” says Beland.
