Insights from the Sphinx Virtuosi

Arts & Culture

On Sunday, March 26, Sarasota Orchestra presents Songs for Our Times by the Sphinx Virtuosi, a professional, self-conducted ensemble of 18 accomplished Black and Latinx artists. The Sphinx Virtuosi represents the flagship performing entity of the nationally recognized Sphinx Organization. Sarasota Orchestra is one of 100 orchestras nationwide that participate in the Sphinx Organization's National Alliance for Audition Support, an initiative to increase diversity in American orchestras that provides mentoring, audition preparation, financial support, and audition previews to Black and Latinx musicians who aspire to careers in professional orchestras. Songs for Our Times includes music by some of today’s brightest composers, and several of the powerful pieces of music on this program have been specifically commissioned by the Sphinx Virtuosi ensemble from composers of color, including Valerie Coleman, Jessie Montgomery, and Ricardo Herz.
