Sarasota Memorial Now Enrolling Patients in Clinical Trial for Innovative AFib Treatment

Business

Sarasota Memorial’s Kolschowsky Research and Education Institute is participating in a multi-center research trial evaluating a next-generation device to treat people with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (Afib). Like the commercially available Watchman device, the new, next-generation investigational device is designed to seal the left atrial appendage (LAA) and reduce the risk of stroke without the need for anticoagulant medications. Adults  taking blood thinners to manage risks associated with non-valvular Afib (a type of irregular heart beat that occurs without any underlying structural problems with the heart valves) may be eligible to enroll in the study at SMH, which is led locally by interventional cardiologist Robert Eckart, DO.
