Senior Friendship Centers (SFC) Opens Doors During Giving Challenge, Inviting Public to Experience Aging Differently

Business

Senior Friendship Centers will host free public open houses across Sarasota, Venice, and DeSoto during the 2026 Giving Challenge, from noon April 15 to noon April 16, inviting the community to experience firsthand how older adults stay active, connected, and engaged in one of Florida’s fastest-growing senior populations The approach is intentional: shift perception through experience. Studies show that direct interaction with older adults can significantly reduce negative perceptions and stereotypes. Yet ageism remains widespread, with 82% of older adults reporting they experience it in daily life, according to the University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging. Research cited by the World Health Organization also links ageism to a 7.5-year reduction in lifespan, underscoring its impact beyond perception.
