Via Nova Chorale opens its 17th season with “Voices of the People: America’s 250th Year,” a musical celebration of the ideals that have shaped the nation — freedom, opportunity and the right to be heard. Featuring a 45-voice choir and string orchestra, the program brings together choral and instrumental works by American composers past and present, along with music by Benjamin Britten and Antonín Dvořák. The concert is Friday, November 6, 7 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, 2050 Oak St., Sarasota. Under the direction of artistic director Steven Phillips, the concert explores the promise of American democracy through music and the words of influential voices, including poet Langston Hughes, women’s rights advocate Susan B. Anthony and poet Emma Lazarus.
