[Epicurean Food]  Artisan Cheese Co. Brings Sophistication to Box Lunch
Andrew Fabian, andrew.fabian@srqme.com

As takeout continues to offer the safest option for avoiding our homemade dinners, the loss of the plating experience is felt all the greater; or, in the case of Artisan Cheese Company, it’s the boarding experience. The cheesemongers know how to put together a delightful still-life of treats, providing dine-in guests with a feast for the eyes to preface the feast for the gut. And even when those same boards are now boxes, the colors, textures, smells and flavors still provide a playground of sensations that can make you forget, if only for a moment, that a pandemic is the reason the cheese and charcuterie cannot come arranged on a beautiful piece of wood.

For those of us lucky enough to have a trustworthy COVID tribe available for the occasional socially distanced picnic, an ultimate cheese and meat box from Artisan Cheese Company offers enough for four. Five cheeses, two meats, assorted fruit, crackers, pickled veggies, jams and honey come stuffed in a hefty box. The gals at Cheese Co. mix up the cheese varieties, offering a full range from mild to funky in every box. The Bay Blue from Point Reyes, California is mild and sweet compared to more potent blue cheeses, and pairs well with a drizzle of honey or a small dab of jam. For a more festive combination, the Virginia spicy plum chutney pairs well with a slice of salami on a Rustic Bakery citrus-ginger-thyme crisp, perhaps with a wedge of Clothbound cheddar from Cabot and Jasper Hill, Vermont to top it off.

Just make sure to wash your hands before digging in.

[Milestone]  ArtisTree Landscape Celebrates 30th Anniversary with Truck Giveaway

ArtisTree Landscape Maintenance & Design celebrated its 30th anniversary by giving employees miniature die-cast replicas of its iconic white truck. The surprise event also featured an unveiling of the key used to start “Big Jake,” the firm’s first large mower fired up in 1990. “Because of COVID, we had to scale our anniversary event way down from what was originally planned,” said Vice President of Marketing Debra Morrow, noting anniversary logos had been displayed on the company’s entire fleet of trucks since March. “But by giving our employees their own little ArtisTree truck, they could at least have a personal keepsake to commemorate our milestone.”

[Milestone]  Music Compound to Celebrate its Fifth Anniversary

As its five-year anniversary approaches, Music Compound will take its own advice and “rock out loud” with a celebration in early February. On Friday, February 5, 6-9pm at the Sarasota Fairgrounds Robarts Arena, Music Compound presents its 5th Year Celebration, featuring music by The Good Time Groove Band. “My goal in founding this business in 2016 was to be more than a place where people took music lessons – I wanted to create a music community,” said founder and owner Jenny Townsend. “Over time, we have built a place where member families and staff feel like a part of our family, where instructors adhere to certain standards but have the creative freedom to express their own passion, where aspiring artists of all skill levels can gain confidence that will carry them throughout their lives, even if they don’t pursue music professionally. I feel so fortunate to be able to love coming to work each and every day.”

[SOON]  GRAB BAG: Virtual: Bookstore 1 Sarasota: The Poetry Zoom Book Club led by Doug Knowlton , January 13, 2pm

This month we're discussing A Map of the Lost World by Rick Hilles on January 13, 2021 at 2pm. A fee of $23 is required for participation. This includes a copy of A Map of the Lost World and the Zoom book club meeting. The fee is $28.50 to have the book shipped. The poems that make up A Map of the Lost World range from tightly-wrought shorter lyrics to longer autobiographical narratives to patterns of homage (in several forms) of poets that Hilles admires and emulates (including Richard Hugo, James Wright, James Merrill and Larry Levis) to extended voice-driven meditations, one in the voice of a German Jewish woman, a prisoner who would escape a French concentration camp and go on to fight in the French resistance, to other efforts to confront history and not be devoured by history, and to locate, even resuscitate, friends lost to death, if only provisionally. Ticket purchase required for Zoom link.
