[SOON]  SEMINAR: Online New College New Topics: Inclusion at any Cost? , January 27

At a moment when colleges around the country, including New College, are doubling down on the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion, what can we learn from the turmoil and angst experienced 10 years ago, when New College students discovered that among their number was a young leader in America’s white nationalist movement? More than merely a member of the movement, Derek Black served as a site moderator for Stormfront, America’s first “White Pride” website, created by his father and white nationalist movement leader, Don Black. Many students demanded that Black be expelled. Should the college congratulate itself for Black’s eventual renunciation of the white nationalist values he grew up with? When a community member’s political beliefs are perceived to be a clear and present danger to the community, what is the appropriate response for the community and its leadership? This event will take place on January 27, 2021.

[SOON]  MUSIC: Sarasota Orchestra: Serioso , January 28 – January 31

Serious composers inevitably spend years developing their unique voice. This program, from January 28 until January 31, 2021, features music by three master composers from three different centuries, each of whom broke new musical ground. Arcangelo Corelli essentially invented the concerto grosso style, in which a small group of soloists are accompanied by a larger string group. His Concerto Grosso in F Major is the last in a group of 12 works that were influential when they were published in 1714. George Walker was the first African American composer to win the Pulitzer Prize in Music in 1996. His glorious Lyric for Strings was composed in honor of his grandmother who was born a slave. Beethoven himself titled his Quartet in F Minor, Op. 95 “Quartetto Serioso”. Dedicated to a friend, he feared the work might be considered too intense and did not intend to publish it. Gustav Mahler thought otherwise and orchestrated the work for string orchestra in 1898. $10 Streaming Access from February 4 through 9.

[SOON]  PERFORMANCE: The Players Centre: Souvenir , January 21 – January 31, 7:30pm and 2pm

Souvenir, by turn hilarious and poignant, tells the story of Florence Foster Jenkins through the eyes of her accompanist, Cosme McMoon. Eyewitness accounts of their concerts vary so wildly it is almost impossible now to separate fact from gossip. Hence this fictional "biography," in which we follow the story of their partnership from its earliest days to their infamous concert in Carnegie Hall and its aftermath. With each new imagined triumph Florence's confidence soars. Faced with her boundless certainty, Cosme comes to revise his attitude, not only towards her singing but to the very meaning of music itself. A musical odd-couple for the ages. Enjoy Hamlet's Eatery Thursdays through Sundays up to 30 minutes before show time. Seating is provided. Dates include January 21-23, 26-30 at 7:30pm and January 24 and 31 at 2pm.
