Tuesday Dining and Food Edition

"This distribution center allows us to give back—by creating opportunities for local families and making sure we provide fresh food at a fair price for years to come."
For many Sarasota residents, Detwiler’s Farm Market is more than just a grocery store: it’s a community staple. Family-owned and operated since its humble beginnings in a small roadside tent, Detwiler’s has grown into a well-loved local chain with six stores across the region. Known for its motto, “Eat Fresh for Less,” the market has earned a loyal following by offering an abundant selection of fresh produce alongside a seafood market, butcher shop, deli and bakery. Customers also flock to Detwiler’s for specialty items such as cheeses, butter, milk, organic produce and homemade ice cream.
On September 29, 2025, Detwiler’s marked a new milestone with the opening of a state-of-the-art, 133,000-square-foot warehouse and distribution center at Florida International Tradeport in Palmetto. This major investment strengthens the company’s local supply chain, creates new jobs, and positions Detwiler’s for continued growth while ensuring that prices stay affordable.
Founder Henry Detwiler, Sr. reflected on the journey from small beginnings: “From our start in a small roadside tent to where we are today, it’s been incredible to see how this community has supported us. This distribution center allows us to give back—by creating opportunities for local families and making sure we provide fresh food at a fair price for years to come.”
“This facility represents an important investment into our community,” added Sam Detwiler, President of Detwiler’s Farm Market. “By bringing our operations under one roof, we can operate more efficiently, create more jobs, and pass along even better pricing to our customers. It also gives us the ability to grow and open more stores in the future.”
With this expansion, Detwiler’s continues to deepen its roots in Sarasota while looking ahead to an even brighter future.

As many of you know, Taste of Spain is not just a business — it is my life, my passion. Right now, my husband is in the hospital facing a very serious health challenge. Recent days have been overwhelming, and I realize even more how much the love and goodwill support of this community mean to me. This little store has always been built with my hands and heart, but also with the help of all of you — your kindness, your encouragement, and your joy in sharing Spanish traditions with me. Now more than ever, I need your support, and I hope to see you at the store, at our classes, or simply stopping by to say hello. Cooking and sharing Spain with you gives me strength.

Protein has many roles in the body including recovery, immune support, hormone regulation, skin support, and energy source. In combination with exercise, protein is an important factor for gaining lean muscle mass and losing weight. There are numerous food sources of protein including eggs, meat, poultry and dairy foods. For plant-based options, nuts and seeds, beans and legumes, and algae like spirulina are all options. When it comes to protein powders, whey and plant-based proteins are the most popular. These offer a convenient way to take in protein in the form of a shake, blended with fruit into a smoothie, or used in baking.
