One of Southwest Florida’s most beloved regional grocers, Detwiler's Farm Market, is making its way to North Port in a deal brokered by Michael Saunders and Co. (MSC) Commercial Division. Detwiler’s began as a farmers market and is now a full-scale store with meats, seafood, deli items, pies and produce.
Tammy Shaw, one of MSC’s senior commercial advisors, worked with the Orlando-based Sentinel Fund to lease negotiations with Detwiler’s. Shaw reached out to Susan Goldstein, another senior commercial advisor, who has worked with Detwiler’s since 2016.
“Detwiler’s has been looking at North Port and has been scouting the market,” Goldstein says.
The new Detwiler’s will be 53,000 square feet–the current largest sits at 49,000 square feet in Palmetto–and will be located at the new retail center being developed by Sentinel Fund on Sumter Boulevard.
“It has a great location right at the interstate at Sumter and I-75, so it will have great exposure, and there will be a lot of synergy in this space,” says David Perry, MSC Commercial Division Director. “It’s going to pull people from Fort Myers and Port Charlotte there as well.”
This addition will be the southernmost store for Detwiler’s and is projected to open in the fourth quarter of 2028.
“Up until now, if people wanted to go to a Detwiler’s, they would have to leave the community,” Goldstein says. “There will be more employment, and it will really be a win-win for the community.”
Perry emphasizes the economic and employment impact the new Detwiler’s will foster, as 125-150 part-time jobs will be introduced, along with construction jobs throughout the build.
Shopping at Detwiler’s is a weekly occurrence for Goldstein, and she praises the community-driven mindset the market promotes.

HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital recently added the latest advanced imaging system that helps doctors better understand what is happening inside a patient’s body. The SPECT/CT scan combines two types of imaging: nuclear medicine imaging, which shows how organs and tissues are functioning, and computed tomography, or CT, which provides anatomical detail. The new system combines these images and gives doctors a clearer view to help with diagnosis and treatment of patients.

The exhibition at Selby Gardens’ Historic Spanish Point campus celebrates childhood and the imagination of youth through the words and images of A Child’s Garden of Verses, the beloved book of poetry for children by the celebrated Scottish writer, Robert Louis Stevenson. The exhibition features photographs of pages from a vintage edition of the book, combining Stevenson’s poetry with illustrations by the notable American artist, Alexander Dobkin. Accompanying the photographs are simple interactives that draw their inspiration from Stevenson’s poems and enhance the visitor experience. Bringing laughter to the community since 2019, the Teenyboppers entertain audiences with fun, fast-paced, hilarious shows that tell a story without the safety net of a script. Troupe members explore and develop their improv, storytelling, acting and teamwork skills in a safe, supportive environment, working on acting exercises, short-form improv games and long-form improv activities. At the end of each semester, they entertain audiences with their mad skills in a performance directed by Daniel Dagesse.

See the historic relationship between fiery abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglass and a cautious statesman, President Abraham Lincoln, who is determined to preserve the Union. Written by award-winning playwright Beth Duda with original spoken word poetry by Cedric Hameed, this play explores how two men with different perspectives found common ground during one of the most divided times in American history. This is a 90-minute production that includes a staged reading, followed by a panel discussion with the actors and playwrights.

All seems hopeless until a lot of wine and a little magic transform a hunk of clay into the answer to all of their problems.

As Art Sarasota Center closes its centennial season and begins another century, it welcomes four artists and their works for the upcoming August and September season. Molly Duff-Clarke will showcase Home for Dinner, and curator Alecia Harper will present Shaping Sarasota: A Century of Art, which presents a chronological visual history spanning 100 years of creativity. Antoine Williams presents a new body of work that reimagines Black southern cultural folklore and traditions with Putting Breath in the Body. Finally, juror John Pirman presents the juried show, Icons.
